Just remember that the CPU is ONE component. You also need to consider how much memory you have, how fast your hard drive is, what your network speed is, etc. The system will only run as fast as it`s slowest component.

Often you will get better bang for your buck by optimizing your software rather than throwing hardware at it. Rasmus Lerdorf (the PHP creator) did a presentation on taking an application from 17 requests/second to 1700 requests/second by optimizing the sofwtare.

Hi GraigL

Then again, I`m also biased toward AMD, having nothing at all to do with Windows.

I`ve been using AMD at home for a number of years. My next PC will have a Core 2 Duo because I need the additional power. If my parents wanted a PC I would still buy them an AMD. They didn`t suddenly get less powerful, just less expensive.

Thanks,

I`ll check it out the links. I know that performance is based on many factors. I will be renting a new server and wanted to get feedback about possible performance differences.

Actually, come to think of it, I have been pretty biased towards Windows, leaving Linux in the dark. Then again, I`m also biased toward AMD, having nothing at all to do with Windows.

I am biased towards windows as well as far as using on my desktop machine.  However, for a server operating systems, Linux is the way to go. The L in the LAMP :)  It`s more secure, robust, stable and proven for web servers than Microsoft IIS.  It`s just more complicated since configuration/setup is done via command line rather than point and click like Windows if you are doing it all yourself.

What`s a bit dumb on my part, is that generally I`m biased toward Linux and Open Source apps. Not having my background in network admin, but more in tech support and software installs, I really don`t want to learn the underlying Linux OS. I did that with DOS, and have little interest anymore. Instead, I`ll get a Win32 emulator, then run as much as I can from the Open Source community.

It`s not that I like Windoze. Nor that I have stock in AMD. :-) I think it`s that the thread started with Celeron, Pentium, Athlon, and Xeon. Yes, there`s the new Intel chips, and those (in my personal opinion) are a reaction to AMD and IBM developments, not so much new, revolutionary technology. I don`t think Intel is the best of everything, nor that Microsoft is best of everything.

But I do keep an eye on compatibility. Where I`m seeing new information that`s adjusting my thinking, on this thread, is the very different perspective between the personal PC and the network server. I tend to be blind to that side of the technology. Some good stuff, though, from you guys who do have the expertise. :-)

Oh..! Almost forgot! MySQL has nothing to do with Microsoft. My mistake. I`m thinking of another bigass database...came out around the time Delphi was getting started, Oracle was growing, and Paradox was still the hot item...I just can`t remember now. LOL! I must be getting old. Wait....10 days have passed! Hell....I`m antique! :-D

Ah...I looked it up. I was thinking of SQL Server! (But of course, it sounds EXACTLY like "MySQL!") LOL! (Sh*t, I have to get some glasses for my ears!)
