Hello Everyone,

I am going to be opening a small family improv theater in the Phoenix metro area.  I am going to hold auditions for the cast and then put them through training if they make the cut.

Are there any ideas, resources, or concepts that would help me get the word (about the auditions) to as many people as possible with a relatively small budget?  I have thought of a few but would like to hear some of your ideas.

Thanks,
Joe

PASSION!

Make sure people see your passion - tell the workmen who are working on the theatre, tell the grocery checkout clerk, tell the local journalist, tell the cable guy.....you get the picture.... Tell them all the story, the WHY you are doing it.

Think of it like an elevator pitch - only instead of financial assistance, you are looking for PR.

Back this up with flyers in coffee shops (leave plenty in case the waiters are interested and keep it for themselves - protective beings these thespians:-), Universities, etc.

Finally explain your passion to the auditions and be sure to tell them what your goals and aspirations for the theatre are. You might not pay the most or be the most credible right now - but don`t underesimate the attraction of being part of the very first performance of the "xyz" theatre before it "got big" & sold out for a kakagillion $$`s to Broadway:-)

Best of Luck

Lee

Go to one of the graphic design schools there (I would recommend Collins College on Priest street in Tempe) and hire a student to do a nice brochure, poster, etc. for you. This will be cheap because it is a student not a graphic design firm, it helps out the student by giving them a peice that they can use in their portfolio, the project will be displayed and critiqued by teachers and students which will give you free publicity, and finally, you will have cheap, but nice advertising to go to all of the other schools to hang up. Only have the student design and make one copy then you go to alpha graphics or kinkos and make the rest. If you have them do a quantity amount at the school, it will cost you.

Joe -

I`ve done a lot of work with a number theatre companies over the years.  Most have been very successful in getting the word out about casting calls/auditions with the use of press releases to local newspapers, flyers left at other theaters of other live entertainment companies, and postings in the "call board" sections of local papers.  Many newspapers will post calls for auditions weekly in a column provided as a public service.  If your local papers don`t have such columns you might suggest they consider offering them.

Having a web site and linking to (and getting listed on) resources such as the Phoenix Office of Arts & Culture will help promote your auditions and future performances.  Here in Portland there is the Portland Area Theatre Alliance which creates opportunities for a lot of online interaction with theatres, actors, and others through their web presence and online forums.  Is there anything similar in Phoenix?

Best of luck! - J.

Hi Everyone,

These are all wonderful ideas!

Joe, you may also want to contact local offices for the big three acting unions (SAG, AFTRA, Actor`s Equity) to see if they can provide any insight or be willing to post your auditions at no charge. Check casting papers like "Backstage West" too.

Also, post your press release or casting call at places where your potential, new theater members hang out. Perhaps, you can have music and acting teachers at local schools/universities make an announcement (if you are casting young people).

And if you think all of your PR activities are going to result in an exciting casting call with lots of people, call your local television station with the angle of "finding the next American theater star in the local area." The reporters may be interested.

Just a few additional tips..

Break a leg!
