Hello.

To captcha or not to captcha?  That is the question...

Do you believe captcha affects your ability to take full advantage of the marketing of your website?

By that I mean, do you think after all of your hard work to market and successfully drive traffic to your website, when visitors arrive to then be scared away because you chose to use captcha on your forms including your `Contact Us` form?

Is having captcha worth the loss of those who leave your website because of it, especially when it is hard to read?

How do you think you look in the eyes of the American Disabilities Act (ADA) or does it really matter to the audience you choose to cater to?

Do you believe it is a double-edge sword or not?

Have you ever experienced filling out a form and either you took too long or left and came back to finish only to have the form rejected because the captcha time expired and it erased your input and you had to start all over again?

From what I`ve read over the years, this is still a highly-controversial / highly-charged subject - one that may not go away anytime soon...

What`s your opinion?

Captcha is a mixed blessing. I run forums. Two word Captcha is a godsend at the moment for my free time. I don`t have to ban bots. However, it never ceases to irritate me when I come across it on other people`s websites. Still, I understand what webmasters go through, and I don`t begrudge anyone a sale solely because they`re trying to fight bots.

The more action you require from your visitors the lower the feedback or response.
On the other hand only the real interested or motivated people will go through it which targets your prospects.

Personally, Captcha is frustrating. Sometimes the numbers or letter are too hard to decipher and it`s not seldom that I have to redo the whole form (unless I use autosave). Why not use alternatives like "2+4" = ? Of course your target group better be mathemical then lol.

Captcha is a great thing and anyone not willing to type in the 10-12 characters is lazy and probably won`t be of much use to you in the long run.

I really hate what the human race is moving towards.

Although with Quick Response (QR) Codes becoming more and more popular - it won`t be long until entire billboards are nothing but hieroglyphics.

A QR Code is a matrix code (or two-dimensional bar code) created by Japanese corporation Denso-Wave in 1994. The "QR" is derived from "Quick Response", as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed. QR Codes are common in Japan, where they are currently the most popular type of two dimensional codes. Moreover, most current Japanese mobile phones can read this code with their camera.

What does this mean to you and I? Soon small businesses will all want to develop their own QR code so that they`re not let behind. Welcome to the future, ladies and gentlemen - Click. Beep. Done.

I tested forms on my various sites with and without CAPTCHA. And while I experienced a significant decrease in spam with CAPTCHA, I DID NOT experience a significant decrease in sales or opt-ins.

If you are uncertain about whether or not to use CAPTCHA, I suggest you do your own testing.

The only time I use it is when I`ve decided to become a registered user. Otherwise, it`s just a pain. As a registered user, I appreciate that the site is trying to reduce spam. The best feature is when you have to use the CAPTCHA when NOT logged in, but it goes away when you ARE logged in.

You may want to rethink using regular captcha.  What I stumbled upon while surfing was mind-blowing.

I chose NOT to use captcha based on my own usability issues with it. I have almost 20/20 vision and have been using a computer since I was 8 (I'm now 31), and I still have issues with it. A better solution is to have a really good spam/filter system. The burden should be with the company, not the customer.

Captchas are very annoying, and in my opinion should be used on customer service related inquiries, etc... but never for sales. Of course you are going to get spam. That is without question - I would rather have a really good filter/spam program rather then loose a sale of a customer - which when they get annoyed will NEVER come back.

I know I have strong feelings about this, but that's because the captchas are just so annoying!
