DeafCeo, the investment in hardware, bandwidth connections and much more are very costly, let alone having the right and highly knowledgeable ( as well as honest, dedicated, and more) technicians to run it.

Personally, it`s not a job I`d want, not with the constant hacking attempts and battle against spam, irate customers calling you at all hours because their site went down (very often due to poor, insecure coding on the part of their web designer), plus the 24/7 responsibility for keeping everything running without a glitch.

Having worked for an ISP that ran their own servers and hosted sites, and knowing what they had to go through to keep things as trouble-free as possible (and with a lot less success than the large hosting companies), I really appreciate what it takes to do this job and do it right. And that`s not even touching on the customers who have absolutely no clue what they`re doing, but want you to explain stuff that it took you years to learn, and who blame you for all sorts of things over which you have no control.

It`s tough enough at times on my end, even knowing that things are being handled by experts, but dealing with a server being down because a piece of hardware went on the fritz. It happens, although not very often considering that the hardware is always running and always under a load. Even well-maintained hardware goes down from time to time. It`s a harsh business with no holidays allowed--someone must always be there, just like a hospital, or someone could lose their livelihood.

I agree with Pat.

Dedicated hosting is a rough business. Infrastructure cost are high, technical staff is hard to come by and every customer has different standards.  I too use to work for a large ISP. They had some of the best and brightest minds from BBN. They burnt over a billion dollars before they sold it off below cost.

Andrew, if you agree with Pat and experienced this directly in your work with an ISP, why would you want a dedicated server?

CraigL,

My core application is database, CPU and memory  intensive. My experience even with fairly simple database applications running on shared servers has been consistently poor.

CraigL.... it`s really tough on those sharing that server with someone with an app like Andrew`s as well, since CPU and memory  intensive apps make all the sites on that server run slow as they try to share the CPU time. That`s why it`s important to have a dedicated server for something like that--it`s not just for the person with the app, it`s also being fair to and considerate of those with whom you would share that server.

Very thoughtful of you Andrew, even if that wasn`t your main reason. :-)

Having a dedicated server can be  a neat thing if you  are staring out a small business. But it can also be complicated.
There are two types of dedicated server configurations. 1. Dedicated Managed and the other is Dedicated Shared.
What is the difference? Dedicated managed means you do all your technical support, install applications, run processes and if a customer has an issue... It is up to you to resolve it...So basically, you are a dedicated server and you provide your own technical support.
Also it depends what type of Operating System you are using.. If you are using Linux, you have to know how to Use SSH, How to Configure certain Permissions such as chmod777, via Linux, you have to know how to check you bin directories, how to set IP Addressses, SSL Certificates, and there is so much to learn... The same goes for a Windows Operating Server.
No as for a Dedicated Shared.. Well, that is what the name says, You are sharing your Server with various people and You use the same RAM and resources, so lets say The guy next door is using his server to stream Videos, you are going to run into problems. There is also some servers that RUN on a Program called Virtuosso.. By Plesk... After So many years in the Web Hosting business I installed Plesk Virtuozzo on one of my machines and I am amazed as how this software manages resources.
Now, I also seen that alot of people Are giving 1 and 1 lots of hype... Well, it wont be until you need to use .php or something simple as Form mail that you will run into problems... See these companies only cater to start up businesses that don`t know anything about web hosting or what a web server is supposed to do... Why? Because most people that start a business use basic html to design their web site.
Things really get complicated when a developer that knows what he`s doing starts running into problems.
Then you know it`s time to Move on to a better server...
Like I mentioned above, I have a new Server, if anyone is interested in trying out my server for a few months feel free to contact me. I would be more than happy for you guys to check out my resources and UP TIME. on and my new Knoweldge base where you can help yourself or post support tickets...
As a matter a fact please tell me what you think of my KB Click here
I am still working on it but once its done it will be a good resource... for everyone.

Dedicated Shared? There are two types of web servers. Dedicated and shared. Dedicated gives one user the entire box which can customize to meet CPU, RAM and Storage needs. Shared means that your sharing a server with many companies and you have no control over hardware options.
