This is a beta version. Please excuse the mess.

I need to know if when you visit this site, can you get the pitch in 10 seconds or less. Is it understandable? Interviewables.com

I did the site myself. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. It is far from complete however. I just want to know if I`m heading in the right direction.

ps. please excuse the adwords ads, I`m hosting the beta for free.

Actually, it seems to me to make sense for people to post beta versions of their developing site before it goes live. That way they can more easily avoid problems they hadn`t thought of or seen.

In this site, I wonder...are you expecting to use video extensively? You seem to be saying that in your lead paragraph...but I don`t see how the layout will focus mostly on video.

Think about YouTube. As soon as you hit the site, home page or any other page, you instantly see a video player, a title, and that`s pretty much it. You know immediately, "Oh...this is a video place. I`ll push this button."

On your site, you see what appears to be a blog. Yes, it has words like "video" in it, but why read anything at all?

Here`s what you have in that lead paragraph:
InterViewables.com

InterViewables.com is an interactive video sharing community dedicated to helping you gain valuable interviewing skills. You do this by uploading videos of yourself answering interview questions. Your videos are rated and commented on by the community. You do the same for others. So get dressed in your best (just like a real interview), choose an interview question and get started!

Wouldn`t it be simpler to say:
InterViewables.com
Use our interactive video sharing community to improve your  interviewing skills.
  • Upload your answers to questions.
  • Rate and comment on community videos.
Then have a big video player and a demo example. Below that, or off to the side, you can have your "Join" fields.

Alright, this is a lot better, and it`s clearly a video-based Web site now. I`m still seeing a lot of lag, both when I clicked the link (the time to load the page), and when I clicked a video selection. Not so bad that I abandonned the site, but it`s slow.

I really like that you have the play button right there in the middle of the video. It makes it easy to click and play.

What I`d like to see now, is a BIG button...like maybe the second tab to the right, next to "Home" with "Upload Video."

The reason is that this whole site is basically about 2 things: Upload a video, Get a critique. That`s the "What" part of the questions.

"Why" is where you discuss getting help on job interview videos. (The "who" is obviously the visitor to the site.)

So you need to make it really easy to handle the "What is this," and the "How" part---how do I get involved.

Ultimately, in the About or maybe some other tab, you can handle the "Why" part of the event. See? It`s the standard for any good story: who, what, when, how, why. :-)

But this is definitely a whole lot better. Make the "upload" a bit more obvious, and I think you can take it out of beta. :-)

Oh...one last idea: Have a clear button "Email to a friend," where someone can pop in an email address, a simple comment, and you`ll email the message and link to whomever is in the address. I can see that these interview tapes will have a great deal of comedic value, and people will want to share them.

That email sharing will help with viral marketing to your site.

Craig you`re a genious, I really appreciate your help. I won`t forget you when I make it big.

The lag time is probably because I`m using free hosting. I`ll go to paid hosting this weekend.

How about if you go to the site and post a video...

I think you need to go halfway between your original description and Craig`s.  It took me a couple of minutes to figure out what your site was.  Or  maybe a large "How it Works" button?

Thanks Steve,

Maybe a few more details. I get it.

How about adding a video. I hate using those generic videos I have, my camera is on the fritz. Once I have some actual interview videos to show, they will explain a ot by themselves. Thanks for the input, I`ll work on it.

Yah, the copy in that first paragraph can be changed. Typeface, size, headlines, bullets, etc. I figured a quick example would work on a beta site.

Steve`s right, you want the visual for the 10-second test, but you do have to have the copy for the backup. People still use words...just secondarily to vision. ;-)

JW, I`ll tell my 30 children that if they ever need money to go to college, they always ask "Uncle JW" to pay for it.
