Hi

I am working on the developement of a website using LAMP technology.I am trying to figure out the web hosting related cost and infrastructure .Can somebody shed some light on this.

I knw this is a very general question .With out knowing the traffic it will be difficult for you guys to say. I am working on something similar to Digg technology( i dont store videos, but will be a kind of link, but expects to get some user comments etc).If you ask me about the traffic, i dont knw.Its in a development stage( I expect it to get some good traffic down the line ,though not initially).

Which is best cost effective web hosting comany? What would be the expected cost ?Should i need to go for a dedicated hosting or shared hosting? What is minimum bandwidth ,memory i  need to have ?( Let us start with 1000-10000 hits on the website per day).

i dont have any investments as of now..! so i will look for a cheaper but faster one.please guide me

thanks

joseph thomas

There are many hosting companies that can start you out on shared hosting and spin you out to dedicated hosting when you need it.

Many people say Dreamhost is excellent, but I know they have had some problems. Hostgator is one that many people also swear by.

Great advice from Nikole. Lots of hosting companies have good/bad records. My advice? Check the better business bureau beforehand.

At the small end of the market I like BlueHost. For a dedicated server I would use Server Beach. If your site gets big enough that you need a dedicated server then "value" is the last thing you should worry about.

You can also go to Google and search for "[host name] review".

When people have a host they have a problem with, they really like to tell everyone else.

FWIW, I have an account on Dreamhost, one on HostGator, one on Xtreme-Host, and one on TypePad.
Dreamhost is good for sites that are large and space-intensive ... but not necessarily mission-critical. Lots of info, but no high-traffic stores.
HostGator is where my e-commerce stores go.
Xtreme-Host is where I host my ColdFusion sites.
And TypePad is where I host several blogs using the MoveableType Platform (like the NHG NETWORK blog).

My thing is that I will never accept a host if the services starts to take a dive ... I have my files, I can pack it all up and put it up on a new server in 24 hours. This is what happened with Bluegenesis ... unhappy with their services, I packed up my (15 at the time?) domains and went elsewhere. (I had been using them for several years without problems ... and then suddenly the problems started and I was not receiving proper help with them.) To the user, if didn`t even look like there was a lapse in service. One day of work, a day or 2 of DNS transfer, and I was up and running in a new place.

Never accept if your host starts having problems ... you can always go elsewhere. Also, don`t go to somewhere like Register.com or Network Solutions. Their domains are a ripoff, their services suck, and it`s impossible to get away from them. (Bluegenesis hosts the servers for Register.com anyway.)

FWIW, you can also split services between hosts if that works better for you. Like I have a blog on TypePad but the email for that domain comes through GoogleApps. Or I have another domain where the www.domain.com is on one host and the store.domain.com is on another host. For our own site, the news.nhgconsulting.com is on one server and the www.nhgconsulting.com is on another.

I answer questions like this as part of my business so I can tell you there isn`t a simple answer. Anyone posting one here is simply guessing. There are just too many variables. The best advice I can give anyone in your situation is to make sure your application scales horizontally. If it doesn`t then you`re going to end up in serious trouble if it takes off.

I use godaddy, if you have a promo code you will save 30%. Also, you can search the promo codes in google.

Yes, GoDaddy is good to start with. GoDaddy or maybe HostGator. They're fairly cheap and can give you your specified needs.

Well, of course it is hard to get some funds to pay for your hosting needs but you got to make an investment if you are planning to run such a site.
