My Business Idea - Online Newspaper

Hi all before you all go and steal my idea please read on.

This would be a great idea for a combination of people with expertise in writing publishing and could also be a great project for a community of like minded people.

It also could in compass an income generating revenue stream for the main group/company and also for small business wanting to keep people informed in there online business latest technology and items of interest products or services.

However this is easier said than done. For some time I have been doing research and have a rough business plan.

Some of the things I have considered are; a good way for the business group to communicate and keep information confidential. A way to distribute the newspaper online. A way of receiving a subscription payment. The software required. Ways to control publishing content. Ways to advertise.

The online newspaper could have regular feature writers .. all things that an off line newspaper would have and more as offline newspapers often delete content to protect their own revenue streams.

I already have access to much of the expertise needed through the many online networking communities I belong to.

What I am seeking here is expressions of interest from any readers who would consider joining the project. Just leave me a comment so I know who you are.

I am creating an email list of all interested parties so I can send a news letter with progress and requests for people with expertise. This will help in getting this project started.

No one who wants to participate will be excluded.

I hate to be the naysayer here, but I don`t think this is a strong idea. First, modeling an Internet company on a physical product/idea misses the whole benefit of the web. Amazon is successful because they 1. have more books than a bookstore can carry and 2. you can get reviews, rankings, and descriptions online that you can`t get in a real store. Second, the newspaper business isn`t exactly booming. Their audience is being stolen by online media. Third, before you get too excited about the potential of #2, the "online media" that is stealing the readers is focused on community-generated content, not professional beat writers. Blogs, forums, MySpace, YouTube are the media of the future. Oh, and they are free!

You could probably spin your idea a bit to fit this reality. Otherwise, I would steer clear.

I don`t even understand what you are proposing.  Online newspapers already exist.  Distribution already exists in the form of RSS and email subscriptions, not to mention people simply visiting websites. And Doug is completely correct in pointing out the shift from pro writers to user-generated.  And I will add to that the point that people are getting their news from multiple online sources, rather than say one newspaper`s website.

The traditional newspaper is struggling not only because readers are going online instead but because of the structure of the business.  In today`s news media world, the model of the public getting news purely from a single professional source is quickly becoming antiquated.

If you want to be a player in digital news, you have to do something completely unique that is not being offered yet.  The internet is already inundated with news sources and that is only growing.  I think rather than adding another online newspaper to the overflowing pool, you should think about how to better distribute what is already out there.

This sounds more like a blog to me. What would be the purpose of privacy? People are not paying for newspapers online. Why would they pay to read information from unknown writers?

Hi All

This is just an update to answer some questions.

This newspaper would be so low cost possible it could be given away free. If there were 50 contributes cost would be $1.00 per month each to produce.

I am in many online communities and the knowledge base and people with writing skills is vast. This newspaper would be unique in that if would cover topics not seen in everyday newspapers. It would be a cross between news comments on current events and special features on many subjects ignored by major newspapers. Like web page building promotion money making software modules new technology etc.

It would also be more of interest to people online or wanting to go online with their businesses. People who want the truth rather than a lot of sales talk. Like any new concept it would adapt and grow and be diverse.

You could have writers willing to answer questions etc.

I am also asking all contributors to add their point of view and you can get a lot out of 50 people with varied expertise.

There are writers and people who may join who have big followings or existing readership.

Please ad what you would like to see or contribute.

Hi Steve

If I tell you now everyone would know and we would have no advantage.

Steve go have a look at Writingup to see the talent there.

http://www.writingup.com/?referer=6406

Most writers do not put their best articles there as they earn very little from that site.

I`m not questioning whether you can find talented people to write.  I am questioning the concept in the first place.  It sounds like you are thinking of a user-generated online newspaper kind of thing.  Like Wikipedia but news based, or any other subject for that matter.  That sounds a lot to me like the blogosphere.  How is this different than blogs, other than perhaps it being on a single website?  And if that is your advantage, RSS readers have already begun to cover that territory.

So you`ve got some tricks up your sleeve that you are being secretive about.  I can certainly understand that.  But how is it that you expect people to get on board for something new if you won`t say what is new about it?

Steve

I am certainly willing to share my idea with anyone interested.

If you want to find out send me your email address and I will keep you informed like all other interested parties.

If you or anyone else thinks this is too close to something that exists.

Think of this... Before Mc Donalds there were thousands or berger shops... before Google there were hundreds of search engines.
