I think that Playboy made its mark first by being a lifestyle magazine
with a lot of articles about how to attain that lifestyle. It came out
in a time when many people were reading magazines, in print, but most
magazines were sort of ho-hum. When Hefner bought the rights to the
Monroe picture, that was the first major use of a nude centerfold.
It`s true that the centerfold became a huge component of the Playboy
identity, but it wasn`t the *only* identifiable aspect of the magazine.
To my knowledge, isn`t "Maxim" magazine a place that emulates the
combination of lifestyle and fine looking women? To try and build a
subscription service on only pictures doesn`t strike me as having
enough substance, particularly in the online world of anything from
amateur to professional porn all over the place. There`s going to have
to be something more to it.
