Hello fine minds our here under the SuN!

Recently, we have had the opportunity to speak with an older disabled gentleman in our neighborhood. He is struggling to survive on his limited income from Federal/State disability benefits. We have examined our current production requirements and can refine a position to accomodate his needs as well and allow him to successfully complete his tasks.
My question is, how can we employ him without affecting his benefits? Can we? Is there a limitation i.e. certain amount of hours, training, etc.

I have checked the .gov on this and it is difficult to find information addressing this particular circumstance. Thanks in advance for your advice!

It is a wonderful gesture to want to be a part in helping this person who has a need to improve his income. I would suggest that you call your local Department of Labor - perhaps they can assist you in this sensitive matter. I really hope that this all works out for you and the potential employee.

I wish you great success in your business.

I`m definitely not an expert on this, but hiring this person shouldn`t be a problem. Paying them is the problem. SSI and SSDI recipients need to be very careful about how much earned income they have. Earning too much can not only jeopardize their supplemental income, but also their medical coverage.

I found a couple of sites for you with basic info (here and here).

Good luck!

Hello!

Thank you besthealth for your kind words and for your advice. As we explore this topic, I am learning that there are many (too many) folks in this position where their income is not great enough to survive, but f they try to supplement it, they lose everything. It is a rock and a hard place as I can see where some people would look to exploit allowances.

KevDev, thank you so much for these links, it was exacty what I was looking for. I really appreciate you taking the time to research this with me.

As we move forward into these new waters, I will keep you posted on how this turns out!

Thanks a bunch!
