If you are creative enough, you can generally find a one off that works and doesn't require you to purchase a taken domain name.  That being said, I wouldn't go with a poor domain name just to avoid additional costs.

Buying an aged domain name is preferable only if the main keyword you are targeting is in it.

I recently bought  the domain name Joomla Training Online and the site was indexed and ranked at number 6 on Google in under 24 hours using my special linking strategy I teach.

I have other sites in this niche that have not been indexed at fast or high because the main keyword was not in the domain and I didn't use the linking technique.

So keyword rich domain can often be more important than an aged domain. If you get both then you might strike it rich!

Many good domain names are parked so just go to yourdomain.com and see if there is a website there or if it is parked and for sale. Sometimes you can get these at bargain prices, other times now. Two other resources for buying domain names are Sedo and Afternic or of course, you can make up your own.

Domain Name - Choosing Your Domain Name Can Make You Or Break You!

With millions of websites on the Internet today, choosing a Domain Name can become quite gruesome. Have you ever asked yourself, loved ones, friends, your dog etc. - “What shall I call my Domain“?

Not having a clue about your site’s name can become tiresome, exhausting and even draining to say the least. I‘ve known people that have taken months to make a decision about their Domain Name.

First of all, before you even think of choosing a Domain Name, you have to know what type of business you are thinking of promoting or getting into. Does the word “niche“ strike a cord?

A profitable niche can be described as a certain business or market category you can be interested in getting involved with to promote either someone’s product or maybe even your own. There are three main niche categories and they are as follows:

WEALTH

HEALTH

LIFE STYLE

Wealth Niche

- Can include these types of businesses - Business Opportunities, Home Based Business, Work from Home (great for moms or even dads), Internet Marketing and Advertising, Selling Products on eBay or Amazon.com, Stock Market Investing just to mention a few.

Health Niche

- Can include these types of businesses - Quit Smoking, Migraine Headache Remedies, Losing Weight, Exercise Equipment, Correct Eating Habits, Herbal Diets and so forth.

Life Style Niche

- Can include these types of businesses - Pets, Travel, Magazine Subscriptions, Home & Garden, Fashion Industry and more.

Once you have chosen a niche, you want to make sure that whatever Domain Name you choose for your site is relevant to what you are promoting.

Example:

Let‘s say you have a website and the theme of your site is Pets, (a billion dollar a year industry, by the way), you want your name to be something like the following:

“lovemypets.com“ or “petproducts.com“. Are you beginning to catch my drift?

Relevancy to your niche or whatever you‘re promoting is vital to your online business success.

Try to also keep your Domain Name short and sweet and use this TLD (Top Level Domain - “.com“. You want you‘re name to look and sound professional and easy enough to remember.

If you find out that a lot of the names you are choosing are already taken, try and be creative by adding a hyphen between words. There are plenty of Internet Millionaires out there that do use hyphens in their Domain Names without it causing any problems.

Best of luck to all and be sure to choose your Domain Name wisely!

I think it all depends on your target market.  In industries that are over-saturated you will have to buy your domain name and pay a tidy sum for it if you want to even think about being seen.  If your intent is for something unique and local chances are a catchy name and domain that you create yourself will be sufficient.

Yes, this depends on your business, if the domain is useless to improve the SEPR/traffic/sales then why not creat yourself?

You can always use hyphens between the words. It doesn't affect SEO and could be the difference between getting a domain name that works for you or not.

If your favorite domain name is parked you can always go ahead & purchase it. But if website is live I would try to buy a unique domain name. I would try to get a domain as relevant as possible if my exact choice of domain is not available.
