I`m in the process of getting my website off the ground. I`m doing the website on my own, because I know exactly how I want it. It`s not ready for public review just yet. I search public records at my home. I`m going to get a home occupation permit from the county, but I have to first go before a board at the planning department. I definitely know I need that, but do I need a business tax license as well. I`m sole proprietor, I will be filing a regular tax return, just as self employed. I will pay self employment taxes throughout the year, why should I have to pay business tax also. Another question, I may be on the wrong board for this. My website will require for my customers to send a lot of personal information online, I need something reasonable priced to protect my customers information.

You should have a comprehensive terms of use statement for your website, as well as a privacy policy describing how you use customer`s personal information.

Depending upon your state, you may need to register your business for tax purposes, and if you are using a fictitious name for your business as a sole prop, you`ll need to register that as well.

Every state is different regarding licensing, registration, fictitious business names and tax structure.  Your local Chamber of Commerce may be the best source of free infomation.

You start at the bottom - City Hall.  Go to the city clerk and inquire what licensing and permits you need to run a home-based business.  If you are not modifying your home, putting up signs or having clients in your home, I can`t imagine why you need to go to the planning board.  But, then, every city is different.

The county is likely where you will register your business name and most likely where you will obtain the sales tax license.

The state level is where you go if you are hiring employees or incorporating.

If you are a sole-proprietorship or simple partnership, you don`t need a federal tax ID for the business.

Again, every city, county and state is different, but don`t be afraid to ask the clerks at each level where you should go next.
