So... I`ve now had four months starting up and have finally taken the time to reflect on what I could have done better. There`s probably some useful stuff in here for anyone else taking the plunge so thought I`d share rather than hoard it!

Hope it helps someone!

Hi there Colin :-)

Don`t beat yourself up for a "brain dump." You`ve likely grown up in a culture where ANY kind of self-assessment, analysis, and asking questions is considered "negative thinking." And God forbid anyone, EVER, should be guilty of negative thinking!

There`s a reason we have the phrase "trial and error." And there`s a reason we use the word error instead of failure, or that we label something a failure instead of a mistake.

One of the worst problems today`s entrepreneurs face is the magical belief system that "there`s no such thing as failure." Of course there is! And there are problems (not challenges), obstacles, mistakes, errors, and also right or wrong.

We learn from what we did wrong IF we think about it, remember it, and understand how to apply the information. But that means "negative thinking," and feeling badly. Or hurting someone else`s feelings.

hi colin - read your blog... very interesting, very honest, but i agree with master curmudgeon... some things just don`t work and some things are just obstacles, but its up to you to decipher what you can live with and what you need.  being a start-up is a BIG learning curve, and you should factor in a few days where you are just "brain dead." just write it off.  good friends stick around and a simple apology will go far.

charge your batteries and maybe just scale things down a bit.  for instance, there are five pretty important issues i need to deal with and have been putting them off - my product also is about to launch, but there are ducks i still need to get in line before my site launches (http://roadragejewelry.com) (sorry-i can`t help myself :) so i wrote them down and prioritized them (x5); i have to look at them every day... i work at a law firm during the week, and there are many days where my brain is fried, but i try and budget at least two hours a night working on my company and that "damn" list...two of the five i have now taken care of; the third one i am taking care of next week; and the remaining two i have rationalized, cannot/should not be taken care of until the site is actually up.  do i expect a barrage of new issues after i launch? you betcha, but the weight of the launch  will be off me - and i will deal with whatever comes at me when it comes... the lift-off is the heaviest...

be well... legx3

reminds me of an old saying; "there comes a time in every project to shoot the engineer". sounds like you are almost there but not ready to let go.
let go then be awesome at customer response, they will take you where you need to go, and forgive yourself all that other stuff, friends understand if they are friends, if not oh well.
carry on and great success to you!

Thanks for the feedback guys! I`m feeling on top of the world now! (follow up blog post)

Stan, we`ve very much hit that point! Unfortunately it`s more the CEO being the one who doesn`t want to get it out there for fear of failure. We`ve stuck a date in the ground now though and we`re going for it! 1st July so not long now!

Legx3, I was where you were a few months ago - working full-time and doing a startup as well... Boy is it tiring! Good luck! :-)

Craig, great response :-) It`s true, we`ve all got too much belief that failure is a bad thing. Got to stick to my old motto more - "You`ve only failed if you didn`t learn from it"
