Bootstrapping with future purchase agreements?

Let's say you are still developing a product and a retailer/distributor agrees to but a certain quantity from you once the product is ready to ship. Of course, the  retailer/distributor also demands that the product meet certain specifications. 

What is this type of agreement called?

I'm developing a technical product and, pretty much, the only way to fund this venture is if I get these sort of agreements and then show them to potential investors to get even more funding. I'd basically be crowdsourcing with retailers and distributors rather than individuals.
