I recently discovered your site by accident and  just love it.  By the way, I am 64, work part-time and have started a gift home-based business.  Our specialty - custom, handmade gift card holders.  Many are one-of-a-kind.  I love the creative side but not the marketing.  It`s so time consuming.  When I approach buyers, I am competing with Hallmark.  Help!

I`m a boomer who has been self employed since she was 10 years old. I`ve worked from home doing dressmaking, clothing design, product design and other artistic persuits. Now that the children are grown, I am devoting full energy to my business. Moving into my late fifties, I am more focused on having a business and being in business.  Its like this, before I was working to supplement my husband`s income, and keep the family afloat---now I work for three things, pleasure, principle and profits.  Pleasure, because I enjoy making unique products tht are useful and need by society. I also have a cap on the amount and rate of production (based on sales/interest) by my marketing and promotion procedures. Principle is in place because I don`t want to keep up with the Jone`s or have them running after me. I don`t have much to weight me down and I`m not trying to leave the most stuff behind when I pass on to my great reward. Profits are needed in their proper perspective so that I can spread the wealth around---take my dollars and support the local grocer, other home-based businesses and of course government in all its layers. As a boomer I`ve learned over the years to live simply and joyously--where I am at.

Hi it`s Brian from Vacant Home Care LLC. I am 55 yrs old and a veteran of the Home Building Industry for over 30 yrs. When I got laid off from my last national home builder as an Executive Manager I said enough is enough. We have been is business just over 60 days and our business is taking off. We manage and maintain vacant homes in transition between occupants for Owners, Realtors, Landlords, Banks and Property Managers. If any of you are interested in a niche market much needed business for your community go to our website at
www.myvacanthomecare.com and send me a message from the site. We would like to expand throughout the country with some choice selected individuals who would like to help our communities get through this over abundance of homes we have created.

Thanks,

Brian Griffith

It is all about remaining relevant. My "Glory Days" will continue and I will not be reminiscing about my "Glory Days."

Thanks for having this forum available to all.

Hello all from Land O Lakes Florida! (no this is not where the butter comes from, that is in Michigan). We are just north of Tampa and about 20 miles from the Gulf of Mexico.

My name is Brian Griffith and I am 55 yrs. young. I was layed off from one of the big national home builders on Sept. 21, 2007 where I was making a comfortable 6 figure income with benifits as a middle management executive.

Since that time I have started a new company called Vacant Home Care. We are focusing our construction efforts on the many vacant properties out there which are listed for sale, REO`s, investor rehab, etc.

I cannot tell you how much happier and stress free I am since cutting that "corporate leash". My wife says I seem much more calm and sure about myself and even used the word "cockey" to describe my attitude! It is such a relief not to have to explain to someone every day when and why you are doing or not doing something. I have been released and it feels great.

If any of you out there have been disinfranchised from the construction industry and would like to take a look at our business model our wedsite address is  www.myvacanthomecare.com

We think it fits the nature of the real estate market we have today and will be a needed service for several years in the future. We have already applied for the copywrite and trademark for the name, we haved formed our LLC and opened the doors to the business on Nov. 1st . We are already rehabing and remodeling several properties and the interest level from prospects is increasing everyday.

One area of our business we would like to expand is the Mortgage Field Services arena. This is where a company goes in and secures foreclosed homes for banks and lending institutions. If any readers have knowledge of this business and advice on how to get in on it please let me know.

Good luck to all of you "Boomers" who are taking the chance of the rest of your life. Let me know if I can be of any help to you in your endevors.

I am interested to know if you can recommend manufacturing in China. I am in the beginning stages; designs completed, prototype completed, fabric sourced but need manufacturing so I can start pricing and getting my designs out. I design sun safe clothing something near and dear to me based on my malignant melanoma diagnosis 8 years ago. I vow to remain safe but still would like the ability to do what I love; sail, swim in the ocean and sit on the beach but safely.

Thanks.

I am not a boomer, I am just 28 a bit more than half way there but I admire the business and life philosophy. I was raised by my grand parents, so I am very fond of advice. I have always felt much more welcomed in groups of older age than mine.  So please forgive me beforehand for intruding. I don`t post anywherem so I guess this forum is what I have been waiting for.

I am new in S.U.N and I have experienced a great joy  learning from everyone involved.
I have read multiple websites months at the time, many not as informative and interesting as this. I hope you guys don`t mind me posting along with you. probably you can consider me as the "boomers back in business forum`s pet"!

I have read individually, every single tread of information in this forum and aswell in the website and I can not have enough. I particularly enjoyed Mr. Joel`s idea which I think is GREAT by the way. I came to realize younger people like me have very little patience when it comes to explaining things or trying to teach someone older than them. I  grew up with grand parents not very inclined for technology and learned thru them the process of explaining things with patience.

I believe Mr. Joel,  you can  find a lot of IT guys like me, who would enjoy working probono in your proyect, many just for the exposure. it just take few people a few hours a day to create a staff and a running business. In my experience getting your own market to know you is the best strategy in a business plan, Why? everybody knows you always ask and go for who you know, and in a business world, exposure to a not tackle market of non tech people, I can assure you once they get on the flow of technology when having trooble and seeking for repairs they seek for those who they know. Is a cycle!!

I also enjoyed  Brian G`s  posts and I have visited his website. NICE WORK. Makes me want to copy him! (pls consider copying ideas as a mere form of flattery!!)

Thanks for this forum.  I look forward to reading up on what experienced entrepreneurs have to say, what works for them, what didn`t.  I have two businesses, both related to health and activity.  I am always looking for new ideas on how to improve and find new clients / members.  We look for people of like mind; love being active (preferably outdoors), eating healthy foods (that taste great, I might add), and truly are concerned about the vitality of our planet.

Are there are some boomers out there (and aspiring boomers :) who have similar interests?  Together we can make changes.  We can have fun!  You know, united we stand.  By now we`ve figured out we are all one people.  We have the power to create the world we want to live in.  The time is now.   Catch the wave, it`s calling.

Love the Life You Live, I do!
Eileen

Hey there you young chicks and dudes!  Isn`t this just like the boomer generation.  You forget that life began long before you were born and there are those of us, who are still around and are orperating/beginning new businesses, that were born before 1946.

I was born in 1941 (will be 67 in September) and operate a number of online businesses very successfully.  I`m also in the process of creating a new one (www.giftretailersnetwork.com).  There`s a lot you youngsters could learn from those who have been entrepreneurs for more years than you can count.

This is a really great forum for Boomers. A great majority of my research deals with target marketing to Boomers. Being a Boomer myself, it is great to see startupnation being such a great resource for other people.

Keep it up guys!
