Walked in to work early this morning. About half of the StartupNation team was working fastidiously away at their desks.

We had a team meeting at 10am. I arrived fairly early and so I saw most of the team members stream in through the door into the boardroom.

At least 8 people were wearing jeans, two people were wearing khakis, no one was wearing a tie, and of course I was wearing jeans, a startupnation hat and an untucked shirt. yes, i had shoes on.

It occurred to me how great it is to be part of a small business where what you wear is not what indicates your status or success. I love how the formalities of the "big business" world are more stories we tell than realities we deal with at StartupNation. What a sense of comfort and freedom and also focus on the important things... like creating value for our customers.

I agree with you Rich. When you are working from home you can be totally casual. I sure don`t miss getting dressed up to go out the door. This can`t be proven but I bet people that can be comfortable in casual clothes work better.
A couple of months ago I went to see a SCORE counselor and decided to dress up. Not because I had to but because it made me feel that I am a business person. It was then I had realized that it had been a long time since I had dressed up. I think when you work from home one of the hardest things is to feel like you are a business person even if you are small but mighty

Rich - you are the coolest!  I`m reading this as I`m walking (running . . . late) out my office door, but this made my day.  Thanks for always being so positive and forward thinking.

Linda

P.S.  I feel like belting out "Forever in Blue Jeans" - which might also explain why I`m a little bit nauseous. . .

I have to agree with Rich,
I get up in the morning and get straight on my computer filling orders,
reordering products and before I realise it it`s midday and I`m still in my
PJ`s, course they are very cute PJ`s `cos I sell them!! But I do love the fact
that I am working for myself and not feel the need to wear stuffy work
clothes..like my poor unfortunate husband. Of course once I make
enough money for him to retire then he too will be able to work in his
PJ`s!!

There`s a lot to be said for jeans, t-shirts, or no clothes at all. But I think it depends on how disciplined and formal a person can be mentally and in their business relationships.

What I see too often is that in companies where very casual dress has replaced formal business attire, it sometimes also reflects in the way they track their numbers, customers, and in their correspondence.

Sometimes having to get up at a particular time, and wear a particular outfit, also "pushes" the mind into a more structured pattern. Remember when Ronald Reagen lowered the boom on the White House press corps? It was so informal, announcements and QA sessions were collapsing into a free-for-all.

Bottom line: If you do you job well, nobody much worries about the way you dress. What`s interesting is that in so many corporations, they don`t CARE if you do your job well, only that you follow orders. That`s probably why they`re such sticklers for how things look...not how they are.

I hate dress codes--ties, especially.
Why don`t we just wear nooses around our necks? Managers can just grab them and say, "OK Swaynester, we need ya in the marketing department..."
This evil consticting garment cuts off blood flow to the brain and is intended to stifle any thought outside of the group think box.
Who invented the tie? That`s right. The MAN.
Seriously.
I`m so much more productive when I`m comfortable. But, I think Craig has a point--you can`t let informal atmosphere hijack disciplined action.
I`m also against nakedness in the workplace.

As many of you may know, I`m often working at my computer in a T-shirt and boxer shorts - I think both the FedEx and UPS guys kind of expect to see me that way these days.  Hey, I like to be comfortable. I only own a couple pairs of slacks and one sports coat.  The rest of time I dress down - usually walking shorts and a Hawaiian shirt - and flip flops.

My partner  manages a law firm.  Years ago he introduced "casual Friday" to the office - no jeans, but people could dress more comfortably.  A couple years ago "business casual" was adopted for all work days. If someone has a client meeting, or court case, they will put on a "silk noose," slacks and a jacket.

About once a month, on a Friday, staff in his office can wear jeans - if they donate $5 to the office`s Susan G. Komen Cancer Foundation fund.

You know, ties are dangerous.  You wouldn`t want to start a plague, now would you?

Kathleen--Thanks for more ammunition against the pro-tie forces arrayed against me.
A pox upon ties, in general, then.
