Is it unprofessional for an e-commerce website to have a beta period?

To me, I would feel quite insecure about transactions/privacy etc.

I can understand the need for beta testing a community website etc. since for the most part there will be little to know money transactions.

My website is not actually ready. I was just asking on people's opinions on whether it best to do a full scale website launch or have a beta testing period, when the website is e-commerce in nature.

An ecommerce site should be "tested" before you launch it to the public.

If you are using an ecommerce program like Zen Cart, Xcart, Yahoo store...etc... the functions of your ecommerce site should not be a problem (although they still should be tested). If you have developed an ecommerce application, then all features and functions should be tested.

In any case, the site should be tested from the user's point of view. Plus, your site should have a privacy statement and shipping and returns policy.
