This article made me laugh - http://www.conversationmarketing.com/2008/05/13-ways-generate-customer-hate.htm

It talks about all the things that people often have on their website that make people want to leave it right after arriving.

That article wouldn`t be half as funny if it weren`t so darn true.  If you`ve been following the other thread here on the end of Geocities, you know there are a TON of these sites cluttering the `net!

Just try telling the people who use these options that they`re wrong, and they`ll disagree forever. If they like the gimmicks, therefore everyone must like the gimmicks.

I don`t think a lot of those people have ever heard the phrase "Just because you can, doesn`t mean you should". And i bet a lot of them still swear by I-frames.

In my experience, the hardest thing for me has been convincing people that flash and a completely video-dominated website isn`t the most user-friendly.

I know that when I go shopping around town, I totally enjoy when I walk in the front door of a store and there`s a waiting room. Lots of stores have them, and you HAVE to sit there while they run a small 2-minute PowerPoint slide-show all about how the store is currently open. But at least when it`s finished, you get to walk into the main store.

Too funny Craig!  The flash is probably my biggest pet peeve, but blinking messages are a close second.

I too, wondered why the makers of HTML invented the Blinking Text font option. I spent many sleepless nights over the course of years, afraid to go outside because I might not keep this problem at the forefront of my mind.

Then I met a Viet Nam veteran who let me in on the secret. It`s a government program designed to test the population for epilepsy. Special NSA satellites monitor computer transmissions everywhere, and when someone has an epileptic seizure, their typing changes.

Blinking text causes these types of seizures (a well-known fact), and so the government can compile data on one of the scourges of humanity.

In other words, it`s a good thing! As we speak, government agencies are working furiously to find the cure for epilepsy. And how would they do that, I ask you, if they didn`t have accurate statistics as to the number of people with the problem? And their home addresses.
