Hi All!  How can I go about researching editors?  I`m trying to get my product into Men`s Magazines like Maxum and Men`s Health.  Also, should I outsource this to a professional company or should I keep it in-house and do it myself.  I`m not looking to launch a massive PR campaign, just releasing a few press releases.

Hi,

I just wanted you to know that a business connection with hartmedia.net created for me and NHF the best feedback one small business could ever hope for.  The press release they issued for NHF  brought our company to a place of being highlighted on a nationwide syndicated program. I would scream Hart Media from the rooftop.  Just wanted you to know.

Hi KGBrooklyn,

If you don`t have a big budget for PR, try calling the magazine editors directly and pitching your story.

Since you have the most passion for your business, you may have the best chance of getting through and giving your story directly to the media. Most of this contact information can be found online with some simple searching. If not, just call the magazine and ask for the information. You just may be amazed at the results!

Also, check some of the PR articles on this site for some free information on what to say and how to pitch your story.

Hope this helps...

As a work in the trenches publicist, newspaper columnist, and small business owner, in September I launched a new blog called www.mainstreetmediasavvy.com.  Here you can learn all kinds of DIY publicity tips, stories and resources to empower your success.  The blog went "live" in September, and the feedback from visitors has been very positive.   If earning local PR for your business is a priority, this is just one more resource to reference as you catapult your business from the darkness to the media spotlight.  Enjoy!

KGBrooklyn,

If you have the time to focus on achieving media placements then I say go for it, but it does require time following up.  Media are inundated every day with releases, so you will need to call them to encourage them to pull your release out of the stack.  Otherwise, if you don`t then it can be worth it to outsource it to a professional who can help you craft the story and make contact with various editors and writers.

Best,

Jennifer

You`ll have to research their websites or check the magazines themselves.  For the most part, they have a list of editors with e-mail addresses both online and in the magazine mastheads.  The sites, for the most part, also have lists of what their deadlines are for submitting for future editions.

Mt two favorite resources for DIY PR are Mondo Times and Skype. Between the two of them I`ve been able to keep my marketing budget low, but still get good coverage nationwide for my business.

I`ve posted a full article on my blog, but the summary is that Mondo offers high-quality, low-cost contact lists for media (newspapers, TV, magazines, and radio) through their Easy Media List service. I send press releases to subsets of these lists (with excellent results), and follow up on the phone using Skype. I set up an inbound number for the office and unlimited nationwide calling for just $5 per month with Skype, and a $25 adapter lets me use a regular cordless phone to place and receive calls.

This is an effective and low-cost way to manage public relations.

Hi Everyone,

If you can`t find the name of an editor online, simply call the publication and ask for the right person.

With so many changes going on in the media today, it`s best to narrow your pitches to some key media members and develop specific story ideas just for them.

Also, take advantage of SEO in your press releases to build buzz. You may want to check out my list of free press-release posting sites too:

You can do your own PR and be very successful. It just takes some extra time and research to find the right people and give a specific pitch.

Thanks, and I hope this helps!

Melanie
