What is a Banner Ad?
A banner ad is one which appears on web pages you access and features advertisers who have paid to place their ad on the website. They generally appear as a strip across the top or bottom of the page, about an inch in depth. Sometimes the advertising is for the website you accessed, (for instance a banner promoting Yahoo Personals may appear at the top of Yahoo mail) but the space is also sold to other advertisers on a rotating basis.
While you may not be able to afford a banner on Yahoo or other major websites, there are companies which have formed networks of smaller websites that will place your banner advertisement at a very reasonable cost.
How Do I Buy Banner Ads?
These spaces are sold according to the number of times they are displayed, called “impressions” and some sellers will target your ad toward a chosen audience. One such company can be linked to here:
This is just one of many companies which perform this service and the prices vary. You can find more and compare prices by doing a search for “banner advertising.”
Often these companies provide many other internet services, so make sure you are looking at banner advertising. “Guaranteed traffic” generators do not use banners, but full web pages instead, and often require that you have your own website to promote. If you do own a site, banner exchanges are also available which place your banner in exchange for a placement of their banner on your site. You can search for these using the search term “banner exchanges”.
Do Banner Ads Work?
Banner ads were the hottest commodity around for some time on the internet, but their popularity and their effectiveness have decreased tremendously over the years, mostly because they just don’t get clicked on often.
One company which hasn’t given up on them is Microsoft, who is now selling banners with guaranteed visitors. While this is far more expensive than “impressions,” you are buying actual “clicks” on your banner rather than just “views.” They continue to run your banner on their network of sites until you have received the number of visitors which you purchase.
