What is a Banner Ad?

A banner ad is one which appears on web pages you access and features advertisers who have paid to place their ad on the website. They generally appear as a strip across the top or bottom of the page, about an inch in depth. Sometimes the advertising is for the website you accessed, (for instance a banner promoting Yahoo Personals may appear at the top of Yahoo mail) but the space is also sold to other advertisers on a rotating basis.

While you may not be able to afford a banner on Yahoo or other major websites, there are companies which have formed networks of smaller websites that will place your banner advertisement at a very reasonable cost.

How Do I Buy Banner Ads?

These spaces are sold according to the number of times they are displayed, called “impressions” and some sellers will target your ad toward a chosen audience. One such company can be linked to here:

This is just one of many companies which perform this service and the prices vary. You can find more and compare prices by doing a search for “banner advertising.”

Often these companies provide many other internet services, so make sure you are looking at banner advertising. “Guaranteed traffic” generators do not use banners, but full web pages instead, and often require that you have your own website to promote. If you do own a site, banner exchanges are also available which place your banner in exchange for a placement of their banner on your site. You can search for these using the search term “banner exchanges”.

Do Banner Ads Work?

Banner ads were the hottest commodity around for some time on the internet, but their popularity and their effectiveness have decreased tremendously over the years, mostly because they just don’t get clicked on often.

One company which hasn’t given up on them is Microsoft, who is now selling banners with guaranteed visitors. While this is far more expensive than “impressions,” you are buying actual “clicks” on your banner rather than just “views.” They continue to run your banner on their network of sites until you have received the number of visitors which you purchase. You can learn more about it here:

What Do I Use For My Banner Ad?

Ah! That’s the easy part! Automatic Builder has made several banner ads in various sizes to work in your campaign. These ads are preprogrammed with the link to YOUR Automatic Builder site already in place within the html code. All you have to do is choose the banner you want to use, and “copy and paste” the corresponding html code into your banner advertising order. Just make sure the one you choose meets the size requirements of your supplier.

Hi all!

On my website I would like to run advertisement that generates income for every time the add is loaded. Currently I run google ads and get a few clicks but have more space on it and would like to know more about banner ads and if there is any "network" aggregating that kind of adds the same way google run text adds.

Does anyone have experience with any add-aggregator in this space I would very much appreciate some feedback and links.

On my site I have quite a lot of view but not so many clicks so I thought banners could help me build revenue. Thanx for the attention!

/Kent

You can use Google AdSense to run image ads or even video ads, not just text ads.  Their service is excellent because:
  • You`re already using them so you`re used to the interface and will be able to receive payments from one source
  • Their system analyzes the content on your page and serves up image ads to match it.  When you content changes, your ads change automatically.

There are a number of ad networks aside from Google and similar contextual ad networks. There are three problems with these networks in my experience: 1) Payment levels are low, rarely breaking the $1 cpm level to the site owner, 2) Fill rates can be low, meaning that you end up getting paying ads only 25% of the time or so, and 3) The ads can be really, really tacky and intrusive, which can hurt the branding of your site. Also, if your site is laid out with tables and the network serves the ad slowly, they can cause your page to load more slowly than otherwise.

If you use ad networks, the standard technique is to sign up for several and daisy chain them, so that when your preferred network can`t serve a paying ad, you pull an ad from a second network rather a default charity ad. Burst Media, FastClick, and Tribal Fusion are three of the better known networks. There`s a new one called RMX Direct that does the daisy chaining for you that`s worth a look, although last I saw they were still in beta.

In my experience, ad networks aren`t worth the hassle and the hit to branding your site takes, but lots of other people use and like them. It looks like SUN, for example, uses FastClick and Burst Media (if you see ads for nonprofit stuff like the Girl Scouts or NHTSA here, that`s Fast Click or Burst serving up ads that the site owner does not get paid for).

If your site is tightly focused, you will do better selling ads directly to advertisers in your space. CPMs are much better that way. For serving your ads, PHPAdsNew is both free and very powerful.
