I have noticed that many of my backlinks that were originally showing up on my Google webmaster logs are falling off?... Many of these are forum postings and some directory listings... I was wondering what criteria is used? Anyone know how this little black box works? Innocent

he lifespan depends on the site the link is on.  Pages on here for example become archived/compressed and so on the next crawl of the site, some of the links may be dropped as the spiders cant find them anymore.  Similarily new links will be found on the crawl of each site.

You never want to point SB at your money sites if you can help it...which is why I use a lot of Web 2.0 sites (blogger, tumblr, squiddo, hubpages etc). Just because my money site is about Green Widgets doesn't mean I only scrape and post to things that are related to Green Widgets. I scrape all sorts of keywords and post to all sorts of blogs.
The key is not make your posts look spammy i.e. "Hi, I really like your blog about Green Widgets" or "Thank you for the good information about Green Widgets, I will bookmark and come back" That is the type of shit you see everywhere and it gets labeled as spam, deleted and sent to Askimet. So it's worthless. Take some time browse some of the high PR blogs you scrape and look closely at the comments that are made and use those types of comments for your own posts.

Over time, webpages will change their format and alter their site wide links, but in content links are usually made via blog post or article within an inner page of a website. To remove these links would take considerable more effort on the webmasters part, and therefore they are much safer to last for the long hual.

So, it all depends on the behaviour/coding of the site.  This is why getting more permanent link backs - rather than ones from forums -  are best, especially on higher PR and related sites.  E.g. a link from a homepage of a relevant site, with keywords in the anchor text.

Many search engines takes quality back links from the related websites only, so try to get good quality high page rank link from related websites. The will help your rankings.

One good .edu site link from related sites with PR 5 is equal to many links from .com sites of unrelated sites.

See the number of outbound links that are present on each thread in a forum: there are lot of threads in forums: after sometime, threads are buried deep in the navigation: these are few reasons why links from forums do not have a long lifespan.

You should do social bookmarking on high pr sites to recover from this situation because this is the only way to recover from backlink shortage.
