I research and review recession proof businesses, so as I am always looking to add to my portfolio, I am looking for more businesses to add to my list.

My idea of recession proof are products and services which offer verifiable savings and value, needed by the masses, consumable and are free to very low cost start ups. With so many businesses to choose from, what is your criteria in choosing a business which is recession proof?

Success to all,

In all honesty,

I don't think there is a recession proof business. Everyone has taken the necessary cut backs to ensure that business can continue, even if it is at a slower pace then before. People can still continue to get involved in the wonders of the online world of employment or search for local employment. I've discovered throughout the recession you just have to stop being so picky. Being picky is why many people are out of jobs. Take what you can get if it means it keeps food on the table, clothes on our backs and roofs over our heads.

Interesting post.  What type of businesses are you thinking about starting?

Here are some criteria which will lead to a long-term successful business during any economic period:

1. A true competitive advantage

2. Highly scalable

3. Healthy profit margins

4. Niche market

5. Reasonable start-up costs

With all due honesty and marketing aside. I agree that any food related business is recession proof. But although it is not directly affected in the ceding back of the economy, those who are not yet in the food business, would definitely be having a hard time to enter the industry, considering investments. With this being said, you need to enter this multi billion industry (which never runs out of demand).. in the back door, where it's still less competitive.

Here are some on my opinion are recession proof businesses this 2010:

Food related:
1. restaurant express delivery service

Other businesses:
2. online opportunities (e-commerce)
3. education related businesses
4. those whose business is to find jobs for others (job sites, job hunters, human resources, manpooling etc)

Update:

With my most recent grocery order arriving, I am more convinced this is the best recession proof business in my portfolio, and I research them all.  I ordered 109 items this time to test out maxing out the weight of my order given it is free shipping.  I feel sorry for my FedEx man, this shipment was five heavy boxes delivered in snow storm.

I paid $197.98 and retail price in store was $338.89 and for a $135.91 savings on one order, and these were the same name brand items I would have purchased at local store, and not having to drive 28 miles to Walmart, or 11 miles to higher priced local grocery store, I didn't even calculate gas savings or time saved which overall is about 8 to 10 hours a month.

Every item came undamaged outside of box of cereal corner was crushed by heavy pickle jar. I selected that I would accept substitutes just to test inventory levels, and all but one item was substituted out of 109, instead of Bumble Bee Tuna, I got Sunkist. When I evaluate a business, there has to be value, and saving this much on only one order, and I just placed another order, so I am covered for month with regards to non-perishables and now I can run into store for meat, dairy and produce which takes about 20 minutes now instead of 2 hours.

With so little investment to start by purchasing your custom website for $39.00, and a monthly fee of $29.95 which is less than shipping or hiring someone to shop for you, this is one of the lowest cost businesses I have researched out of hundreds over the years. I predict I will save in total about $200.00 net in first month, and about $240.00 every month thereafter, and if you notice, I never even mentioned the shoppers reward and income opportunity commissions.

If ever there was a no risk business, and fast track profit in first month of personal use only, I have never seen this before in any home based business, never mind the easiest as we are not selling, just telling and sharing the savings with others. Since everyone eats, everyone wants to save money and time, I would have to say everyone will see success with transfer buying concept on products everyone already knows all they need to know, all name brands, this is a business with real verifiable value and everyone I showed my packing list to was amazed at savings, many items at 50% off local prices.

Success to all,
