Hi everyone,

I have been tracking the StartupNation web site and listening to the podcasts for months but this is my first time requesting help.

I am re-branding my company and rebuilding my internet strategy. I have retained internet marketing consultants who have asked me to obtain a list of words and phrases that my target customer might type into a search engine (such as Google).  My business is in the field of real estate but, having been in the real estate industry for over 22 years, I am biased towards typical real estate jargon. Your fresh perspective is much appreciated.

If anyone has suggestions for creating a keyword list, I would be most appreciative. Also, if you would be kind enough to suggest a couple of keywords, that would be even better!

I set up a one questions “survey” that makes it easy to “set the stage” for you. It can be found here (the is no link to my site, and NO self promotion as per startupnation protocol):

Please click here to answer the question.

If the link does not work, please paste that following into the address bar on your internet browser:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=aLGr4s3wtYws_2boG5HfWg OA_3d_3d

Alternatively, you can post your answer to my question in the forum. Here it is…

Let’s say,

  • You own a home and you have just realized that you must sell it And,

  • You do NOT know a real estate agent or, if you do, you are reluctant to use that agent AND,

  • You know very little OR quite a bit about selling a home, whatever the case may be AND,

  • You are sure you will use an agent to sell OR you are sure you will not use an agent OR you are undecided, whatever the case may be for you.

(If you do not own a home, just imagine you do OR think of a relative of yours that has asked you to handle the sale of their property for them.)

Now, let’s say that is the middle of the night so you cannot call anyone for help but you must get started on the process of selling right away. In front of you is your computer. Google or some other search website is on the screen.

(By the way, I am not a real estate agent. In fact I purposely am not mentioning what my business does so that your answer is not skewed. )

Here is the big question:

What do you type in to the search field on your internet browser?

First Search:

Second Search:

Third Search:

That`s it.

Thank you very much for helping out!

Alright, so if I understand it you`re looking for SEO (search-engine optimization) key phrases that associate with:
  • Must sell a home
  • Using or not using a real estate agent
So it comes down to an urgent condition where someone "must sell" their home, probably didn`t consider they could be in this situation, and thereby have little experience with the process. If that`s correct, here`s my initial thinking:
Have to sell my house (same with `house` or `home`)
Emergency home sale
Need to sell home
Bankruptcy sell assets
Get equity out of house fast
Need money now house home
Rapid home sale

I`d go to the Google keyword analyzer and put in some of these above ideas to see what they come up with.

Thanks, Craig.

Actually, the urgency was to set the stage for a "what`s the first thing that comes to you mind" response. And that is just what you gave me. Very helpful!

Thanks, Dale.

What would you have googled if you needed to sell?

The first thing I would Google would be

How to sell your home (I tend to be a do-it-yourselfer, unless I`m talked out of it!)

Why use a realtor

Then probably realtor, with my city, state

Good Luck!

Thanks, Kathleen. That`s very helpful. I was wondering how many people might at least start with a "do-it-yourself" related question.

I`d guess most people would at least do a search on "sell my home." The issue then becomes do you sell it yourself, or use a realtor. I suppose in many ways it`s the same discussion as whether to build a Web site yourself or use a developer/designer.
