Hello Everyone,

Heres my delima. I have an idea for a company. I have friends and associates in various areas of the my industry (graphics and signs). I want to ask for their help and advice as part of my research. But how do i do it with out completely giving away my plan? I mean i do trust most of these people but i don`t want to let the cat outta the bag until i have some portion of my plan in place and running.

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated

Omar

Seems to me you have two options: Talk about the idea and get help and advice from other minds, or don`t talk about the idea and forget the help and advice.

I think people sort of want to keep their cake and eat it to when they look for advice but don`t want to talk about the problem---the idea. It doesn`t work that way. :-)

Someone once said that if you truly want to keep something a secret it should be between you and God. As soon as you introduce any other human bean, you have to assume it`ll become public information at some point---at least not remain a secret.

How would it sound if I were to post soemthing like, "I have a secret and I`d like some advice on it! I can`t (won`t) tell you anything about it, but I definitely could use some advice." :-) Does that make sense?

Omar, here`s what I tell people in your situation: You are going to have competition.

Chances are, even though your idea is new to you, someone has thought of it before, and someone else out there is already doing it.

But even if your idea is something that is truly new and unique, as soon as you start your business, someone will copy it.

Being first to the market is great, but it is only a head start. Quality and service are how a business win in the long run.

Good luck!

People like their egos stroked. Ask them questions as if you are just really intrigued by what they do and most will answer questions for you just to show how knowledgable they are in their field. I worked for a sign company that did laser engraving; I just got in good with the guy that actually did the engraving and would occasionally ask a question here and there. Not only did I find out how they did their stuff, I found out about their competitors a.k.a my future competitors.

Another good resource to gain info from is to contact the suppliers of the companies. Let them know that you are looking at getting into the industry and if they see you as a potential future client, they will try to help you.

If you can, get on a forum group in your industry or start one. I am on a forum of engravers and we have no issues about helping out newbees. As it was stated, you are going to have competition... The trick is to use your competitors to your advantage.

I have to agree with everyone here on sharing your idea. It will be copied eventually, its just a matter of time.
If you really want help or advice, seek someone who has intentions and capital to help you start it up and let you be the one in control of running it. In short, propose your idea to investors.
