The best advice I can give is just be yourself. Many of my customers treat me like I`m one of their friends and that`s always a good thing.

Being close helps because of word of mouth.

For building relationship with customers , I think a little bit of humor goes a long way. Remember only make fun of yourself , but never your product.Tongue out

In my previous job, I make sure to know most of our clients (casually), its given that this will definitely give you the return business and/or referral that we all need, but the other thing here is I think, it is plain healthy to increase your network and meet new people.

Yup I agree a little humor can go a long way and the end result can be really big.

In my business, I get to have a lot of contact with my customers. It's part of the reason I chose the field I am in.  I like the interaction with people. Being seen is great, because it shows the client that you care about them, and not just what they can do for you. It also helps with gaining new business.  The best marketing is word of mouth...

A bit late in joining in but never the less Wayne has given some good advice.  I have found in my previous businesses of practicing as a CPA and as a QuickBooks consultant that follow up and keeping in touch with clients is all important. They need to feel that you look at them as a real person and not a dollar sign.

That's why I always followed up with a Thank You card or gift to my referral source. I also kept in touch during the year so that I would be "top of mind".  I firmly believe my practice grew because of this.  In fact at the end-when I sold-my practice was growing by referrals only.

As I said I had been doing the card sending strictly by hand until I found SendOutCards which automated the process yet let me continue to send a written card with my signature on it. And not only that, cheaper than I could do it on my own.  So if your are curious about this, send a card on me. No obligation. Just go to www.sendoutcards.com/cardcoach . Or give me a call at 352-854-8943. I would enjoy talking marketing with you.

Mike

There has been some great advice here!  It's all been very practical, which is great, but I'll add a little philosophy.

Basically, I think that it's vital to treat your customers as partners. Even if they're not businesses, you're supplying them with a tool or service that helps them meet their goals.  So your business isn't actually about the thing that you sell- it's about helping them meet their goal in any way that you can (given your skill set and assets).  Approach them like that, and I suspect you'll realize both better ways to help them with your current offerings, and entirely new products and services that they'll love!

Most of those ideas come from my favorite entrepreneurship book (which is available on Amazon, or here for free) so you can learn more if you'd like.

Good luck!
