If you have any personal experience with e-classifieds software, I would like to hear it. I plan to purchase a classified program and my security guy likes the look of this program more than any other linux/perl program he`s seen. However it bothers me that both the standard and professional versions seem to say that there is a provision for charging for the ads but avoid giving any information about how that is done. The very expensive commercial program comes right out and talks about its seamless facility for accepting credit card payments. Another thing that worries me is that there is big discount for paying for the program in cash rather than credit card. While my immediate assumption is that they want to avoid the credit card charges, both ways would probably amount to much the same payment. What would be affected, however, is the buyer`s recourse. Please post any information to this list or email me. Thanks so much.

I don`t have much any experience, but it sounds fishy. If they don`t offer clear  information I would call and speak directly to the seller.  Ask, ask, ask.

The few classifieds that I have used, were small scripts, but didn`t offer a robust system, like you probably need.

Keep in mind that while charging for ads--there are so many free internet classified posting ad services.
I suggest to start off FREE and charge in certain categories later on, like Craigslist did.

Thanks for your input. I`m sure you`re right about starting out mostly free but we want the program we buy to be able to handle expansion later on. JH

e-classified?
Yes I have some experience with this type of development. Are you looking to use Credit Cards only or are you going to offer Pay Pal as a way to collect payments from the subscription customers. I designed one for a client but he really hasn`t been pushing the issue to get some clients there.. you can see it here.. it http://www.ahorramas.net

Can you explain to me what you are trying to do? I might be able to lead you in the right direction.

Thank you for your reply. We are planning to use one of the several e-classified programs to start a classified website for this community. I can use Paypal but would prefer not to. The info on the  less expensive e-classifieds program I would prefer to use seems to avoid any mention of "how" payment can be accepted although they say they can be. Again, thanks for your interest. Thanks for your response. We were considering the Standard edition. I emailed the company and they responded that the edition offered no way to accept payments online. That we would have to bill users and they would have to send a check. We`re still mulling over that one. Thanks again. JW

well, if you have to do everything manually why not use the system that I have already? It accepts Pay Pal Credit Card Payments and can be modified to accept regular credit cards. What`s the price they`re charging you? Is it monthly? One time? What`s the deal?

My security guy would like to see the programs running. Can you refer us to some sites? He also wants to know if they are Unix/Lenux and if they are written in perl. Thanks JH

Sorry for the delay here... I didn`t have Broadband for almost a week.. doing some repairs to the building. But anyhow.. Yes the program was written in PHP which runs on Linux.
And No it`s not dependent of Pearl (CGI).
As far as the security goes. Well, all you need to do is have an SSL certificate installed on the admin / Customer side and you`re there... Easy easy as that...
