Hi,

Inspired by "The Speed Of Trust" by Stephen M. R. Covey and a recent study in Denmark I just posted a short note on the Human Resources phenomena Lifebalance. Maybe not everybody in here are already familiar with the term, but the article describes shortly what it is all about, and there are some inspirational tips rounding the whole thing off.

Anyway, I wanted to check if any of you people have already tried using these techniques in your startups, or maybe you worked in company with these strategies earlier on? I`m eager to hear about earlier experiences and opinions for future articles. Please don`t hesitate to drop me a note !

The article about Lifebalance here -> http://thebusinessupdater.com/?p=35

Kind regards,

Malte

Classic Boomer logic....get rid of rules and regulations, and leave it to the employee to use self-discipline and personal inspiration to get the work done. It could work, but there`s going to have to be a fall-back position that, "if you don`t get the work done and it isn`t `brilliant`, you`re fired!" :-) Right?

Accountability. Freedom is earned by hard work, planning, organization and building a culture for success. Empowering the right employees to think for themselves, take responsibilty and pride in their work is a by product of being the " Man in the Middle." The Life Balance is earned. " No one ever planned to fail, just failed to plan".............RIGHT!

Where we come from trust is earned... over time and with actions. If trust is broken it must be restored the same way... over time and with actions.

The only way we`ve built trust into our business is over time.

Think of marriage where the ultimate trust is necessary. No rules! What about forsaking all others and keeping yourself only for your spouse?

Currently Christie Brinkley and Cynthia Rodriquez (A-Rod`s wife) would have some strong opinions about trust. :(

Trust is gained only if it is given.  Loyalty is gained only if it is given.

I think, as business leaders, we need to give it first if we expect to receive it.

So you would give a convicted child molester your trust and allow your children to hang out in their home? A bit extreme to make a point...

Trust can only be given where there is confidence that a person can be relied on. We can give  somebody the opportunity to show they are trustworthy...  not the same as giving them our trust.

As they are faithful then our trust grows. But we do not have any basis for trust until they have the opportunity to earn our trust... either through others validation or our own experience with them.

As leaders we need to give people a little responsibility... see how they do with it. If faithful then give them a little more. If not... find someone who can be responsible.

BUT, as mentioned by Mike, trust is only gained if given. I believe that it is a question of finding the right people for your business culture, and saying that you would also need to screen people before giving them the job, so you don`t end up with a convicted child molester in a kindergarten.

The word that comes to mind is reciprocal. Sounds like trust is a two way give and take between people.

From a leadership perspective... isn`t a good leader someone who can develop trust in the workplace? Someone who can create the right environment for trust? For us that means giving opportunity... but within clear boundaries.

Guess we struggle with the idea of getting rid of the rules and regulations. Sounds a bit Utopian at first, but has lawlessness ever worked in any society... including a business community?

Personal freedom is the choice to either play by the rules of the game or not. We all need some measure of accountability. Left to ourselves don`t we all tend to do what`s best for me rather than the team?

Trust is an assumption that prior truth will continue as truth. Truth is a statement or action that agrees with reality, and that means an objective reality---not a "belief" in some personalized version of reality.

Some people don`t trust anyone until they`ve proven to themselves that other people consistently are truthful. Other people trust everyone until a person proves that they`re not truthful. It`s a matter of personal psychology and style, but the concept of trust rests entirely on truth of action and word.

Depending on that style, the person who withholds judgement until later "gives" trust. The person who trusts from the outset "takes away" trust, when the object or person being trusted fails to be true.

Honor refers to not only truth, but also morality, and it isn`t the same thing as trust.

I understand what you are getting at, but we cannot take cliches and expect to live by them. "It isn`t  as easy as 100% give trust than receive trust."
I do believe that by being a good leader -
1. Having a excellent culture for success( organized, plan, team building ) &
2. Empowering your employees to think, have a understanding of decisions being made, being proactive and give them the opportunity to succeed or make some mistakes.....then be accountable for their actions.....they will feel trusted and become part of a team concept that is a step towards a successful culture.
