I`ve been in business as a consultant for just 6 months now, and already I have way too much original content I`ve written to backup efficiently.  I figure there`s got to be a handful of online backup services for individuals and home-based businseses. Anyone know of any?  Or know where I can find a review of different services to consider?  I`ve already searched the web and had no luck.

thanks!
Maggie

Kim Kamando has several companies she recommends.  She is a computer guru with her own radio show and Internet site.  The link below will take you to her site.  You can also send her an email with your question.

Out of sheer paranoia, I back up all of my files on a portable hard drive.  I picked up a 500G portable from OfficeMax for just under $150.  I also use one for all of my client data instead of saving it on my laptop, which keeps my laptop from bogging down and protects my data from loss should my laptop be stolen or have a system crash.

Hi all,

Something to keep in mind, security experts are now recommending businesses use off site backup providers.  The main reason is simple to understand.  What would happen to your records if your office were to catch fire?  Or, how about an earthquake?  Would your files survive even if they were on an external hard drive?

Good point!  I DO keep my backup hard drive off site - in my bank deposit box.  I pull it out on Friday morning, do a full backup while sitting in the bank lobby (I use a laptop and 2 hard drives - 1 for data, 1 for backup) and then return it to the vault.  Worst case scenario, I will lose 1 week`s data which can be reconstructed if necessary as all client paperwork is received by fax and/or email so that THEY have the originals.  Chances of both of us having a drastic data loss at the same time is astronomically low. :)

I`ve tried both Mozy and Carbonite offline backup.  I like Carbonite much better.
$55 a year, less than $5 a month, how can you go wrong?  Here`s an EZ link
to setup Carbonite, comes with free 30 day trial I think:

It seems to me offline backup is a better idea than buying external drives or whatever.
In case of fire, flood etc., the computer AND the external device are ruined, so what good is that?

Hi Maggie - For online back ups I use Mozy`s online service.  For free, they will give you 2 gig of automated backup space, which I`ve seen is enough for most people`s basic documents and files.  When you get into digitial media files the 2 gig`s won`t cut it, for for around 50-60/year you get unlimited storage.  I use this one!  You set the frequency of backup and it handles it all for you, you can also access the files remotely from a client site for example if you need a file.

The other option that I know of that others use is Carbonite.

Thanks...

Hi Maggie,

As many have stated here a hosted solution could work for you.  Of course there are pros and cons as with anything.  Take a look at this article:

Latest Cloud Storage Hiccups Prompts Data Security Questions

I hope this helps.

Thanks everyone!  Looks like the favorites are Carbonite and Mozy.  I`ll take a closer look at both, then let you guys know what I learn. I do have a bunch of photos to back-up, so I`ll need space for that.
