I recently just moved to a small town. After being in this small town for a little over a month I have began to think that it would be a good idea to open a store that sold items that are not so accsable in a small town. Does anyone have any suggestions for how I could go about getting items in mass quantity for less money and on how to start the  business idea up?

I grew up in a small town, I graduated with 30 people!  What types of things are you interested in selling?  Try to decide what type of items you would like to sell.  Then I would talk to the towns people to see what they feel they "need" close by to purchase and see if that correlates with your what you are interesting in selling.  As a small town girl, I would advise you to make some connections in the community so you have the support of the people.  Without the support you have no store!

Corey, can you give us a few examples of the items you are thinking about. Since you say "in mass quantity" I am thinking you don`t mean things like furniture and appliances but rather, items similar to, but not necessarily dollar store type of stuff. Do you mean just a  hodge podge of things like "Everything from soup to nuts". We have a small general store and pizzeria cafe type place near where we live and they have some grocery items, kitchen gadgets, nuts and bolts type stuff, some tools, rent videos, just a little of everything, Is this what you are thinking?

This might seem simple, but have you been to the local chamber of commerce in the town. Or go to the local shops to find out how you can help improve their business by becoming a wholeseller to them. Go to the local barber shop listen to the conversations. Doing that the town will tell you all you need to know about what the need and what their wants are. I am doing this right now I live Chicago, but the neighbors are like small towns. I when to meetings in my local area and find out they needed business training for HOSO in the area. I am working on providing a class that will teach that. It`s not a big project, but just think I will get to know a lot about potential customers should I teach the class.

I am in the middle of launching my new company.  We are a direct sales company, selling all consumables (Candles, Bath and Body, Facial and Hair care, and Mineral Cosmetics).  I have about 20K invested into the business at this point and am trying to find 5000-7500 in order to secure a few things that I do not yet have for the launch.  I`m hoping to find a private person either willing to make a loan at a higher interest rate, or a silent investor.  My personal credit is in shambles due to a divorce, so traditional means of lending, and Prosper are not options.

Any suggestions?

I am working on my credit.  The divorce is less than a year old.... he got all the property, furniture, etc... and was given all the bills, which he  promptly filed bankruptcy on.  14 months ago, my score was a 740.. now im in the low 500`s thanks to the ex.  I`m working on it, but its a slow process..

Based upon your type of business, the amount you seek and your situation - I`d say you need to find an individual who can (and will) support you with a personal loan. It`s probably going to be someone you know or someone they know, so I`d begin to tap into your expanded network.

If you want to discuss the specifics of your situation, send me a PM.
