Craig:

blog = content management system.

Where else are you going to put articles if not in a content management system?

I think the issue at hand is most people`s definition of a blog. Why do you think articles don`t belong in a blog?

So where would you put articles?

Definition, by the way:

A blog (a portmanteau of web log) is a website where entries are written in chronological order and commonly displayed in reverse chronological order. "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

So, basically ... it just means that the most recent articles would be on top, as it should be.

Right! LOL!! That`s the discussion! Where WOULD you put the articles! :-D

I get that we have to use some sort of word to describe a "blog entry." Hmm...maybe that would work? :-) The problem, I think, is that an "article" has a fairly well-understood meaning in the field of writing, journalism, editing, and publishing.

It`s only that with blogs being so publicly available, AND that various blogs have allowed certain unknown journalists to become world-reknowned that there`s an issue.

Maybe a deeper issue is who would or should be responsible for the longevity of information on the Web. I see the Web as a sort of voluntary thing, where if someone feels like putting information out on it, that`s a helpful thing for the rest of the world. But if that information goes away, well, life`s a jungle. :-)

Good points!

sorry I lumped all blogs together....I subscribe and read daily,  two very informative blogs pertaining to the sewn apparel, design entrepreneur industry and I learn something new everyday.   I would be lost at sea without these knowledgeable womens blogs about the design industry.

Well if the definition of article is

a written composition in prose, usually nonfiction, on a specific topic, forming an independent part of a book or other publication, as a newspaper or magazine

and you start to see the web as a publishing platform, a blog as a content management system for managing text data, and a blog entry as one part of the larger body of work ...

it does make sense, I promise.

Craig, there are many uncommon uses of blogs and feeds ... I talk about some of them in this entry. We also had a site just go live that uses blogging technology to deliver a newsletter and post the same content online (good for SEO) - you can see it here. Using Feedburner to deliver her newsletter means that she pays nothing for delivering it! She would have to pay for many other services, sometimes $20-40 a month!.

Thank you for the information, Nikole. I have a tendency to shut down when I hear the word "blog," after being subjected to one too many backpacker friend`s navel gazing self-absorption fests. I suspect a lot of these people used to just talk to themselves in front of a mirror prior to the invention of the internet. I wish they would invent a separate label for those!

Nice.

Yes, that is what I am working against! And while I totally understand what you are saying ... there still is such good content out there!

I`m going to post my carnival entry in about ... oh ... less than 12 hours and I`ll write something about it on my blog here too. And then, maybe you guys can see the cool side of blogging!

The idea is the same with any behavior ... reward the good stuff, ignore the bad and let them weed themselves out.

On a total side note unrelated to business blogging ... one of my favorite blogs of all time is Ask Moxie. I swear I would have died a few times during these first few years of parenthood without her! For people like Moxie, there`s really no difference between a column in the newspaper and her blog online ... except, well, she`s saving a few trees.
