Backpage is good.  free-ads.ws is also a good Craigslist alternative that actually gets a lot of traffic.

I don't like craigslist much.  A great way to better the classified industry is to provide videos instead of just photos.  You can try 123exchanges.com :  it's a new video eCommerce marketplace.   They have a very nice video concept where you get to watch the video listing live instead of plain photos.  I personally like it.
