Hello.  I have a working prototype for a fashion accessory.  As is, my product is not patentable.  I want to take the next step to bring the product to market, but I'm stuck.

Should I wear my accessory in public, garnering opinions, and have some product with me for people to purchase?

I also have the name of a person who works at a company where my product could be a part of their product line.  How should I approach/contact this person?

Any information about this situation will be appreciated.

Congratulations on deciding to go to market; that is a big step and one few are able to take ... fear is such an ugly thing!

Always be the cheerleader; wear/show your product(s) and shout from the mountain tops when you can; be open to opinions (even when they get really old and are way off target of your vision) ... you are the best "face" for your invention.

If the contact is in your driving distance, go there and call them from the lobby of the company, say, "I have the perfect extension to your product line and can show it to you in five minutes."  If they are not there, ask for their boss (go up and not down).

The rest is details; you are looking for the look in their eyes that says you have a winner ... if you don't get it from them, go to the next name/company (repeat until you either get it, or get to the point where you go at it alone or make some other changes).

Thank you for your reply.  As far as showing and selling my product to the public, I'm mainly concerned someone will go home and make one for themselves.  But, I know, if I get out there and sell these things, I will be the original and get a share of the market before anyone else.

My contact is not within driving distance;  how can I approach him long distance?  What should I say/write to him?

I know I at least need to get him to sign an NDA before I show him my product.

You did it, you got up and did something about that great idea that was keeping you up. Now that you have a great sample you want to shout it from the mountain tops and share it with the world, before you do so make sure you`ve answered these questions for yourself:

 

WHO - is your target audience (be specific, `who needs & wants what you`ve made)

WHAT - is your product, get a description, practise talking about it

WHY - do people want it, how is it different from other items in the market place
