Hello,

I am interested in adding a trade name / DBA to my three year old LLC. I am in Wisconsin. I called the state Department of Financial Institutions, and was told that I can just use the name I want and make sure my actual LLC name is on my bank accounts and legal documents. This doesn't seem right to me. I see other businesses that say something like "Joe's Enterprises LLC D/B/A/ Joe's Painting" so something like this must be possible.

I can't afford an attorney locally but would appreciate any advice anyone can give. Thanks!!!

From my experience here in Colorado, it is as easy as simply adding D/B/A to the end of your business name.  I would also add that you should include your DBA name on your taxes.  There is a line for it on the form Schedule C.
