Okay, here`s one for the experts.

In 4 short months, my site has earned the No. 1 organic search result in Google and Yahoo for my main keyword phrase, "wisconsin technology attorney" (No. 1 is Nuckles Law Firm).  I created the site by myself, and it is the third in a series of my amateurish attempts at building a web site.  My other sites, with similar content, produced horrible organic search results.  I`m wondering whether others can learn from my good experience.  Not sure what there may be to learn, but there may be something.

I have had a number of attorneys contact me to ask how I achieved such a high page rank in a search arena that is cluttered with content (attorneys).  When I tell these folks, "I honestly don`t know," they appear skeptical--like I`m holding something back.  But that`s not the case.  Yes, I did skim Google`s Webmaster Tools and read some SEO articles, but that`s about it.  If there is something others can learn from my experience, by all means, I am happy to share.  I just need to know WHAT to share!

My latest site was done in asp.net (but with static pages), and I wonder if that may be a factor.  Do the search engines somehow favor asp.net, especially if a web searcher is using IE?

I have done a basic Adwords campaign since January 2008, having produced about 2,600 impressions and 13 clicks.  Could this be a factor in my good organic search result?

I have authored two articles since November 2007, and they were picked up through EzineArticles by a number of sources.  One of the articles has been viewed about 125 times, and the other 28.  The articles contain a link to my site.  This exposure certainly couldn`t hurt my search results, but even if all 153 readers visited my site (unlikely), that still wouldn`t explain such a high organic ranking in such a relatively short time.

Dumb luck is, of course, a possiblity.  Unless you all have some other good explanations, I`m going to attribute this phenomenon to dumb luck.

I anxiously await your thoughts and comments.

Have a great day!

Awesome!
So, `wisconsin technology attorney` is in your title tag (with not much else), it`s in your meta description as well as you first meta keyword (but don`t lose sleep over your meta keyword tag).

I`d say, your `keyword density` within those three arenas are really what`s helping you with this #1 placement. You should work on incorporating that phrase as content in your main copy, as well as when you do any linking campaigns, make `wisconsin technology attorney` your anchor text within the link on sites that link back to you. You may even want to use that as your image alt tag for your main image (or other keywords you would attempt to gain rank for).

Aside from making money, search engines are in the `most relevant result` business. Clearly, the SE thinks you`re the most relevant for the term `wisconsin technology attorney`.  You`re #2 in Yahoo and #3 in Live (msn). If this is what you do (technology attorne)y, then keep at it. You don`t represent well for `wisconsin attorney` and you probably don`t want to.

FYI...your website doesn`t represent well in FireFox explorer. You should check your google analytics to see how many people visiting your site use FF. The main graphic does not load within the container and overshadows your top navigation links. You may want to have a web designer look into that.

The search results for wisconsin technology attorney yields about 207,000 links.
This is fairly low compared to other search terms like technology attorney = 1,270,000 links.
So you have less "competition" for your key word phrase.. thus, it is easier to get higher search results.

Your results highlights the relative importance Google places on the title tag versus other keyword placement.

You also do have a number of backlinks (on Yahoo) from wisetechnology.com and other article site...certainly a help.

Thanks, all, for your observations.  Here`s what I take away from this discussion.

1)  Title tag is very important for Google and perhaps other SEs.

2)  Less competition for a keyword or keyword phrase is a good thing.

3)  Don`t look a gift horse in the mouth.

I will work on employing the other tips.

Thanks so much for the help and support.

This may be in the category of "I want free SEO advice," but since I have no pride, I`ll ask anyway.

If I were to redesign my site, how would I go about increasing page rank for the discrete service offerings within my general theme of "Wisconsin Technology Attorney"?

Would I benefit from dividing up my pages into very specific service offerings, with appropriate page titles, key word content, etc.?

Do H1, etc., tags have any importance?  I presently have none of these.

Thanks for your help.

Reworking your site`s content using your targeted key words/phrases will help.
here are some tips.

Yes, h1, h2, h3 tags are important as are links (internal and inbound)....etc (see above link).

Do you have any stats that tell whether or not people are actually typing in that query and clicking on your ranking link as a result?
If people aren`t going to be using it as a search term, it`s not worth the effort.

Yottazoo,

The search phrase "wisconsin technology attorney" (with or without quotes) does generate about 5% of the traffic to my site.

I`m presently optimizing for related search phrases, like:
wisconsin information technology attorney
wisconsin IT lawyers
software attorneys
etc.

"Software vendor negotiations" is producing No. 4 result in Google right now,  and this one has been tough to pull off.  Even when low in the rankings (30s and worse), it drives about 15% of the traffic to my site.

In a few short months I have come to believe in SEO and the egalitarianism of Google (others will certainly disagree on this last point).  I can optimize a page somewhat, but I need to optimize my pages further and still have a cohesive whole for my site.  This is what I am struggling with now.
