Impetus is a great word!

I’ve always liked ebullient, meaning overflowing with enthusiasm or excitement; and plethora, meaning overabundance or excess.

Oh yes, in fact I can see this thread creating a veritable plethora of great words!!!

Ah words,

It has always been of interest to me that while we understand the meaning of most of the words in our language, we have such a different way of delivering them. Abraham Lincoln, what an orator. He had the ability to take the most simple words and combine them to create the profound.

Speaking of "The Word of th Day" Here`s a funny story that a close friend told me about a guy that he shared a dorm room with. My friend noticed that his roomate had a desk with one of those little paper calendars that you tear a page off for each day. The theme was the "word of the day". Each day there was a new rarely used word with an example of its use in a sentence.  As the weeks moved on he noticed that his roomate was making a point of utilizing his word of the day in conversation and one day caught him throwing one out there. Immediately my friend blurted out "hey! You just used the word of the day!" The roomate, somewhat red-faced, attempted to deny it and that`s when my friend produced the evidence, a 5inch by 5inch square from the calendar with the word of the day. "See! There it is! Ha!"  The roomate was never caught doing that again. In fact whenever he would spout a colorful or multisyllabic word, his friends would say "what was that,... the word of the day?"   Funny how somebody can actually be shamed into dulling their speech!

As far as a favorite word goes.....I`m still thinking about it.

did i even spell it right?

watching the opening ceremony of the US Open (tennis), and heard john mcenroe use it as he talked about how billie jean king transformed all of pro sports for women, "and that`s not hyperbole".

it just rolls off the tongue.

Hyperbole, what a great word. It really does ROLL OFF THE TONGUE.

Here`s one.

Idiom  - Ih-dee-yum.

Its main definition is: An expression from which meaning cannot be deduced by the summary of its parts..........or something like that.

But I think it`s better definition is:  A manner of speaking which is natural to the native people of a language.

For instance........I heard it.. STRAIGHT FROM THE HORSE`S MOUTH.

To somebody that didn`t speak the language that would be just a bit strange and when you say.  What`s the matter?  DOES THE CAT HAVE YOUR TONGUE?

He will then be certain that you are absolutely insane.

Unfortunately for all those that must endure them, our language is CHOCKED FULL OF THEM. See I can`t even get through a sentence without BUMPING INTO ONE. (Or two)

Eric - you`re really starting to GET MY GOAT.

My favorite word of the day is:

Malaprop(ism): (mal-uh-prop-izum)

–noun
1.

an act or habit of misusing words ridiculously, esp. by the confusion of words that are similar in sound.

Ex.  "In the first Olympic games, Greeks ran races, jumped, hurled biscuits, and threw the java.  The games were messier then than they show on TV now."

"Sir Francis Drake circumcised the world with a 100 foot clipper which was very dangerous to all his men."

Taken from an old e-mail I saved -- "History, According to Kids"

(hmmm - this might be an interesting, and worthless, forum thread of its own). . .
