Hello,

Do any of you have experience with 8 year old baseball?  Where we live it is the first year that kids pitch.  While some of the pitchers are decent they aren`t too accurate and my son has gotten hit a few times (just like all of the other kids).  The problem is that between getting hit and his belief that swinging and missing is terrible he doesn`t swing at all.  When a good pitch actually comes his way he jumps thinking he`s going to get hit.  When he goes to practice he can hit them into the outfield but in the games he`s scared.  I was a swimmer so I don`t know what to tell him about baseball!  Any ideas what to tell him that will make him feel more comfortable and start swinging again?

Hi Tracy,

My son is 8 too and this happens a lot in his league.  One thing our coach did was to practice what to do when they get hit using squishy baseballs or whiffle balls.  He would throw the balls at the batters and they would turn away from the balls so at least they would do the right thing and not turn in the direction of the ball when it was coming at them.  I agree that it is just a matter of time. I`ve seen kids who kept stepping out of the batting box and then the next year they were fine.
