So you want to start an e-commerce site? Perhaps you want to sell jewellery? Maybe art? Or maybe you just want to be the next Amazon or eBay? Whatever the reason, there are five steps you should be aware of!
1. Before even attempting to make an e-commerce site, get used to making normal sites first. Find out of the coding, domain names, web hosting packages and everything else you need to run a standard "here's my dog" type website.
2. After this, start building your website, but remember to purchase an e-commerce web hosting software package with a 'shopping cart' feature. This feature means that you can safely and securely receive orders and payment over the internet. The prices, however, vary considerably.
3. Obtain what is called an 'Internet Merchant Account' from your bank. You need to do this because without it you cannot accept credit card payments over the internet, and you want people to pay for your stuff, right?
4. Next you need what is known as a 'payment gateway account'. This is an online account that links your clients credit card with you Merchant Account, so that you can actually receive the payments you accept. Alternatively, however, you could use online systems such as Paypal, where the client sends their money to your paypal account, and then you take the money from that account and put it into your bank.
5. Now you just need to sort out the right web hosting package. There are hundreds of low cost, cheap web hosting packages available, but for e-commerce you are going to need something with a bit more 'umph'. Bandwidth allowance, web/disk space and support are all necessary features that you need to check before signing up to a hosting company.
