Someone just reported to me that the typed The Pet Set into IE and we came up #1 and #2!

Guess all of the Adsense and other SEO tactics work if you keep working it!

Not to burst your bubble kim but how many people search for "the pet set"?

personally i think you should set your goals for a 1st page placement for "pet stationery". then go for the 10 ten and so on.

Keep in mind that being #1 today doesn`t mean you`ll be there tomorrow!

BTW great products, i`ll have to pass this on to my wife

Yep Jonese, my sentiments exactly, and we`re working on that through the tedious-ness that is Adsense, etc.

But a lot of people do see our ads, forget the url do type in TPS.

But I agree with you...we have to work on our tags.

fyi...yesterday we were #2...lol

To Jonese`s point, I typed in Pet Stationery in IE and came up #1...we will definitely keep working Adsense.

What you need to do, Kim, is head over to a site like www.nichebot.com and start trying out phrases to see which are being searched.  I found neglible hits on something like "pet stationery", but plenty on "animal stationery".  And *lots* on "pet cards"  (pet sympathy cards, pet greeting cards, pet holiday cards...)

The first step to SEO is figuring out what the users are typing.

Bardstuff, thanks for the info on nichebot.com - I never realized a site like that existed.  I had already done something like that, just my own personal google search to see what competition would come up with my key words.  And hallelujah, nothing anything like my business came up - great!

The problem with your own personal google research is that you have no idea what people are typing.    You hope you know what they`re typing.   That`s not the same thing.  Don`t go optimizing for (or spending money on!) words and phrases that your audience isn`t searching for.

Yahoo`s keyword selector is useful as well:

http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

Provides you with raw search counts, but it`s useful as a first step - as Bard mentioned, there`s no reason worrying about a phrase if no one uses it.  Chances are with anything related to e-commerce, you`re going to run into a fair amount of competition, but that`s what keeps search optimization interesting.

Another Google Trick:

Take the #1 position for a keyword and type the word Link: in front of the URL.

It will show the # of people linking to that site.  If you can beat them on the number of relevant links, you`ll likely be #1.

(easier said than done of course)
