Well the first year was a complete rush! I started a bug business from nothing…NOTHING! No, not a business killing bugs. I actually set out to promote the love for the bug. My company fascinates and educates children with nature’s little mini beasts - bugs. We do Science and nature presentations for schools and camps as well as offer teachers and parents educational Science toys, gifts, and kits online at www.CoolBugStuff.com.

I have achieved many successes in the past 12 months (a few more than my failures). The company has grown month after month, I have business coming to me, the word is out about my company and things look good on my balance sheet. The best part…the lights are still on!

This year is on track to surpass last and I have even ordered my own custom embroidered shirts (I must big time now!). But I feel that the first year is not the true test. It feels fake to break open the Champaign when I have barely broken in my business. Shouldn’t I be in business turning a profit for at least three years before I start the patting my own back thing?

I felt like celebrating the day I left someone else’s company to start my own but I just don’t know if I have the right reasons to blow up balloons and eat cake just yet.

Anyway, I do want to thank the staff and entire community at StartUp Nation for encouraging, supporting, advising, and inspiring me to hang my own sign up 365 days ago.

Any moment of triumph, no matter the scale, is reason to celebrate. It isn`t the amount of time that`s the measure.

Consider the idea of an "intent." Call it a creative intent or other words, but it`s a process of will and imagination. It`s a desire to cause all of reality to change, to include a new "thing" in the world.

The measure of a success in business isn`t how long it takes for other people to begin to see this new thing. It`s that anyone at all can see it! It`s that this "thing" that never-before existed is becoming visible, taking on cause-and-effect, and starting to live.

So few businesses (things) ever make it to that first year that it`s definitely a cause for celebration! You might be on shakey ground, barely afloat, with 6-cents left after paying to keep the lights on each month. But!...you`re still in business!

Way to go!

Congrads!

It`s important to celebrate the little things, although this is not a little achievement.  You have survived a year working in your own business doing what you love, that is awesome.  So go ahead and have a glass (or two) of champaign!

Measure success against failures. If success is greater, a celebration is in order. Your achievements cannot be measured against someone else`s achievements. Each of us struggle in different areas.

Hey everyday I get to keep working at my own business is cause for celebration?  You proved to yourself you can do it!  Celebrate celebrate celebrate!  You worked hard this year, and you succeeded.  Don`t spend all your cashflow on a 365 day champainge binge, But yup, I think that two or three glasses, and maybe a little shake and spray would not be too much considering so many don`t make it that far!

You deserve it!  So go for it!

Congratulations! Champaign, however, is a city, and you really shouldn`t break it. I think you can get fined for that.

Okay, I actually stressed out over if and how I should celebrate my one year being in business. Your comments not only made it "okay" for me to pat myself on the back...it made me realize that I really should celebrate each day I work for myself. Thank you all for the nice responses.

Jeff, in case you are wondering what I did for the big "1" I flew to Champaign and found a beautiful champaign to sit and drink my champagne.

Just wondering (maybe I should start a poll) how did you all celebrate your first year in business?

It`s awesome that things are going well and you are having a one year celebration!  My heartfelt congratulations!  We had a one year celebration too-- but it was for my baby`s first birthday!

And now I`m celebrating the beginning of a new year with opening www.YourSoothsayer.com.  I invite everyone to come and play!
