Hello All -  I am ready to form a LLC and also want to file a dba statement for my home-based website.  My question is,  can I file the proper paperwork fairly easily on my own directly with my state and obtain a Fed Tax ID #, or  should I use one of the many websites that I`ve come across that will do it for me for a fee?   I like the idea of one-stop shopping and having it all taken care of for me, but I do not want to waste a few hundred dollars if this is something I can easily do myself.   I am forming a LLC and want to have a dba statement for the actual website name, in NJ.    Thank you.

Hi Gags,
I filed my own LLC and registered my own biz too. I live in NJ. If you
have an attorney file the LLC is quite expensive. I chose my business name
and then I applied for my business name with the LLC application online. Total
cost was $125.00.  Another thing, I bought a Nolo LLC book, thinking around
$45.00. Lots of good information plus you are required to have LLC minutes, I havent gotten around yet to do that part though.
Later on I decided I may want to sell too so then I filed for my EIN #. So it will cost you whether you do it  yourself or someone else does it, but doing it yourself will save you some money. If you need any more particulars please feel free to contact me. Best wishes
p.s.  Just wondering are you in the Belleville area?

Thank you for the advice and information.   Do I need to have a Fed EIN # prior to registering my LLC with the state?   Thank you.

Hi

I recently filed my LLC with the state of California.  That EIN # you spoke of was not necessary.

It was a one page document with 7 blanks that I had to fill in detailing the company name and address, along with the founder (me) and my role in the company.  Then I submitted the document to the state capital with a processing fee of $70.

As a general note, the government filing center in most capitals are typically backed up and it will take a few weeks extra beyond what they say for the document to return to your company address, but as soon as it is recieved at the capital and filed you are able to use the unique number ID associated with your LLC.  You can access the number online before the document is returned to you.  The number will not change.

Having this number allows you certain benefits, such as receiving Business Bank Accounts and business credit cards, etc.,.

It`s fairly easy, but I should mention that it`s also important to file your LLC with the national government.  State governmental powers will offer you protection in your own state, but may not offer the same protection that filing with the nation would provide.

Calling your state capital to find out this information won`t help, as they`re not allowed to offer legal counsel.  As in it`s illegal if they tell you what to do and how to run your business.  Therefore the safest bet is to file at the national and state level.

This will ensure the highest protection.

It`s always good to have Fed EIN # if you will be dealing with other corporation, some of them might ask you for you EIN #.

Hope this help

I heard it`s recommended to have an attorney file a LLC for you.  Does anyone have any comments hiring an attorney?  My thinking is having an attorney by your side in case there are questions and concerns.

Forming an LLC is not hard at all. I did it plus I registered for my business
at the same time in NJ. I paid $125 and filed online.

I went to Staples and bought a book by Nolo on forming  your own LLC for around $45. You will need to file minutes when you have an LLC - I havent it done it yet, no time but I will. Any other concerns?
Success to you

When dealing with such critical aspects of your business, and knowing there are many risks in business--but some are unnecessary--we always recommend "going with the pros" - as in, going with the professionals. Get a great attorney, get a great accountant, get a great insurance agent, get a great banker. You might want to check out Step 4 of our 10 Steps process, too.
