Oh sure, I remember lots of people were getting degrees back then. I was still a kid, but you know how it is...people in the neighborhood talk, moms mention their kids in school.....

I don`t know about PT Barnum but John Ringling, his partner, had one helluva house in Sarasota, FL and has one of the most amazing art collections ever seen outside a major world center.  In the 1920s he was as rich as Rockerfeller and Vanderbilt.  I understand he lost it all in the stock market crash of 29....o, wait the college educated guys lost it all then too....oh, and in the crash of 2000.....

Education and common sense can peacefully co exist.

and education and common sense are mutually exclusive?  get too much of one and you always lose the other?

Been a while since this thread was active, but here`s another point. Too many of us, I think, tend to confuse formal education with practical application.

Maybe a long time ago education and practice (implementation) were routinely joined. But that`s not so much the case these days. So I think arguments that formal education isn`t as "necessary" may be based on this observation---this disconnect between academic knowledge and practical application.
