Thank you for replying to my e-mail

I would like to research and propose a recycling business in the Cairns regions. I have limited research due to the fact that I have found it difficult in finding the relevant information.

The Idea/business

To provide small/medium size business a recycling platform and to recover/pick up at a organize schedule.

To truly recycle, individuals and businesses alike must be involved in all aspects of the recycling. In other words, not only must we provide our waste paper for recycling, we also need to support the recycling industry by creating a demand for recycled products.

I would call this (closing the loop) so to speak.

My potential recycling business would also be a distributor and ambassador to the recycling revolution. The Recycled products/fiber will the be sold to the existing clients which will be ideal for use in photocopiers, laser printers and plain paper faxes. We sell this paper essentially at cost.

I would then introduce an offset incentive, where depending on the amount each business recycles I will provide a  % discount for every ton the business saves.

Each category of paper is worth a different dollar amount. White office paper is worth the most and is the only category to make money over the costs of collection, processing and shipping. Therefore it is important that the white paper is sorted very carefully to keep the quality high

I would provide a processing building. This building would then process the relevant materials for Bailing and shipping to the paper/pulp mills. The propose mill will essentially provide the recycled material ready for distributing.

I would then sell the recycled paper back to the business at a price to cover the cost.

This is a brief assessment on the propose Recycled business. Obviously I need to research the relevant oraganisations, facillies, cost, freight, clients, funding.

My question is how do i approach local business with this idea? via e-mail?

Basically is this proposal VIABLE or am I Dreaming.

Looking forward to any response

Robert, what a great business idea, especially if you can get recycling going in a region that doesn`t currently do it.  And I would think one of the biggest hurdles is getting businesses to CHANGE their ways so I think the incentive program is a good start.

I think the best way for you to get support from businesses is by networking rather than blindly through email.  This is the type of thing that when you are finding financing and working with local governments on waste issues, you will need to prove that businesses want this.  So get out there and meet the businesses owners in your area!  Start preaching your ideas!  Make it sound like exactly what the Cairns area needs!  Build momentum and more businesses will get on board!  I think you need to do this more face-to-face rather than by email or phone.

By the way, I spent a few days in Port Douglas a couple years ago.  It`s a beautiful area where you live - was our favorite stop in Australia.  I would think a lot of people live around there for their love of nature.  You can really take advantage of a strong `green` spin on your messaging.

To discover if a business idea is viable, look at the competition. If there is NO ONE else operating a similar business at a profit, you have to wonder why. Often it is because there isn`t enough demand.

Not saying that no competition means your idea is impossible, only that it means you`ll have more work to do.

On the other hand, if you discover a similar recycling business, perhaps in another city of similar size, you know your model is feasible. Good luck!
